Years-Late Thoughts on Untitled Goose Game

August 13, 2022

So I just beat Untitled Goose Game. Actually beat it this time, when I last played (when it came out) I did the regular “New Game+” tasks but didn't do the timed tasks because a few of them are insanely difficult and annoying. This time, the back garden timed tasks were still a real bitch but I actually persevered!

A clip from Untitled Goose Game, of the goose wearing a blue ribbon around its neck and a crown you get for doing all the objectives. It flaps its wings and honks while walking from a park into a lake and swimming around

I really loved it. It is really one of the only games that's lighthearted and actually makes me laugh; while still having real gameplay (that isn't “ohh you walk around and occasionally click the look button at things”) and enough challenge to keep it consistenly engaging, while not being excessively mentally taxing. Amazing little gags and jokes, and the way it encourages you to play around and have fun is so refreshing—shockingly many games insist you play them the “right way” and discourage you from doing your own thing and messing around.

The only downside is there's very little replayability once you do everything. You get one or two replays by doing the extra tasks, and that's about it.

Still, if you haven't played it I highly, highly recommend it. Wonderfully refreshing and original compared to most other games. This is the first game in a long time that I've laughed out loud at, and genuinely had real joy playing.
