Watching the original Star Wars film for the first time in a decade, probably more, was an odd experience. It was an odd combination of old and new. The version I saw had special effects added in from the 20th anniversary. The additions stuck out as the effects were very different to the original effects but not realistic enough to blend in seamlessly. There were stormtroopers riding CGI creatures not in the original release, for example.

The film was quite different to how I remember. Shooting techniques, special effects and acting styles have changed in the 45 years since it was first released. A number of scenes were very "clunky" compared to what you would expect in more modern films. The scene, near the start, when the stormtroopers board the ship that Princess Leia is on. The rebels almost waddle down the corridor to fend them off. Darth Vader is a lot less imposing than I remember. Explosions were not altogether dramatic most of the time. The plot was altogether a lot more condensed than I remember.

Altogether it was strange to see it after so long. Empire Strikes back, being my favourite of the films, is next. I can't wait to see Yoda for the first time.
