hear hear, eph

Social media IS isolation, as you mentioned here - https://eph.smol.pub/1657427715

I wrote a bunch about social media in the past few years, and I sort of stopped trying to "convince" anyone to stop using it (be it entirely, or even just partially), but I still remark on the dangers of the services out there. I like what Drew DeVault had to say about the toxicity of Mastodon, too, as he is 100% spot on.

A friend of mine (online, though I would definitely consider him a REAL friend - just someone I correspond with mostly through e-mail) wrote to me about a post I had up today on tmo.name, and I said this in a response e-mail:

"Thing is, I am not averse to socializing. I also think that online communication in many formats can be a very good thing. There's healthy and unhealthy ways of doing things. The refresh/follow count/infinite scroll/favorite/like/boost/etc model(s) are not pertinent to being a social creature in the digital realm. "

...which is nothing "mind-boggling" of epiphanatic (not a word) about that quote, but what "gets" people, I think, is the entire "status achievement" behind social media structures - removing likes, follower counts, refresh, scrolling, etc etc elements of social media are really not enough, I don't think. And even the character count limits serve nothing. In many ways, people are just better off using a different method of corresponding altogether (online).

Anyway, I still support (or sometimes just tolerate) that people still use social networks, but more people are probably leaving them (all of them) at this point, and that can only be a good thing. It's always up to the individual, though. No one will do it for them.

Ta-ta for now, Smol.pub - stay well and stay safe! :)
