My first Gemlog

How did I end up here?

Somehow I got distracted from reading medical journals about fibromyalgia and started looking into Linux distros. I haven't used Linux in a few years, so I wanted to learn more about Manjaro -- partially motivated by the amusing fact that its logo reminds me of the Homestuck logo. I wasn't impressed by the search results I was getting (too much basic information bloated with SEO keywords) so I moseyed on over to Marginalia Search to try to find something more along the lines of a personal blog post written by a passionate opinionated person without much regard for ad revenue or SEO.

Marginalia Search

Marginalia was down last night for upgrades, so I started exploring some of the creator's blog posts on the site. Eventually I followed a link that lead to Project Gemini.

The next few hours were some of the most soothing I've ever spent on the internet. I didn't feel like my attention was constantly being wrenched away or commodified the way it so frequently is on the web. (Although it did certainly meander down lots of different paths!)

Although I intend to run my own server at some point, I figured that playing around with configurations would just indefinitely delay my contributing anything at all. And I think having a place like this, free from the terror and pressure that I feel on the web, will gently encourage me to actually work on and share the projects I've had planned.

The first one I have planned has to do with translating risograph printing to digital mediums, but I've got a lot of non-technical project ideas too! I've been putting off crochet projects until the weather starts to cool down, but now I really have no excuse.
