Time travel is a concept I have been obsessed with ever since I discovered it way back in my childhood. To this day, I regularly fantasize about going back and doing things over. In these fantasies, I never bother to ask a simple question. "Could this have consequences?"
Indeed, one small slip up could potentially cause the entire world around me to change. This could be something small, like choosing a different colour pack of socks from Walmart changing the look of my outfit, or it could cause something big, like buying a different pack of socks leading to Kanye West winning the 2020 US election. When thinking about the tradeoff of changing the past however, more often than not, we would not take into consideration how to avoid such things occurring, should we keep our memories from the future. Steins;Gate revolves around this sort of plot.
I think that in 2021, Steins;Gate (both the Visual Novel and its Anime adaptation) hold up tremendously well. Aside from the very apparent period of time in which it takes place (2010), the message it holds stands firm: every action has a consequence, whether small or massive. This isn't to say that it is always bad necessarily, but more often than not it is something we would not plan for, and is bad as a result solely for the disruption it causes. This however, leaves me a bit confused in one aspect: with such popularity (#4 globally on MAL) and such a tremendous story with a good lesson to be learned, why is it not considered a classic alongside shows like Evangelion or Sailor Moon?
I was honestly shocked to see this show as #4 on MAL all these years later, 10 to be exact. I never really hear anybody talking about it. In fact, I decided to write this because while on a TF2 server, somebody had a spray of Kurisu, and people were asking: "who is that?". This lead me to giving it a viewing in 2021. I have previously experienced it on my PSP console. The anime was absolutely phenomenal, and is the highest rated on My personal anime list as of now.
Regardless of whether people talk about Steins;Gate or not, it is clear that people are still watching it over a decade later. A lot of people are watching it in fact. I still have yet to experience Steins;Gate 0, so I will probably hop to it next. This does make me wonder if it will be as grandiose as the original storyline however.
