Title: A Short Protesters Guide Author: just_beanis Date: 7/13/22 Language: en Topics: how-to, guides, and manuals, 2022, protest, Urban Revolt, anarchist activists Source: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VY2gTY9aa5Mltl7DDg_AwaDy_I1Q82dG_hs1nW3I9pE/edit?usp=sharing Notes: I'm sorry this isn't too good or detailed, I haven't wrote for a while. Thank you for reading this peaceful protest guide!
((Little warning: I am a white man, this deals with police in good
situations and bad, this is what Iāve been told to do in these different
situations by (hispanic female) family and (white) friends. If you donāt
think there is different reactions for different groups of people you
need to ask marginalized people about their experience with police and
not yell at me for it.))
Know your rights
ALL INFORMATION IS FOUND ON ACLU.ORG
I am an organizer or a protester
You are safest on public property, your right to assembly is much more
protected on public property, (sidewalks, streets, and parks,) you may
also be able to protest in front of government property. The most
important part of this rule is: do not block anything. No exits,
entrances, traffic, or things the select property was made for.
Private property owners may let you protest on their land. You
absolutely need to plan what you, and others, say when allowed on
another person's property, they can take away your ability to protest as
quickly as they gave it, and can have you/others removed or even
arrested.
Counter Protesters are supposed to be treated the same as anyone else
protesting. The police are not breaking any rules by allowing two groups
to be near each other, but you arenāt breaking any rules by being close
to other groups either. Police are obligated to keep those who are
violent away from those whom they are violent to. If you feel threatened
by someone who is saying violent things: tell an officer. I know itās
not safe for some people in some places to tell police these things,
but, if you trust an officer, tell them.
If you are in view of the public you can photograph anything that is in
plain view, including police and government buildings/government related
people. This does not mean you can take a photo of other protesters
without asking.
Do I need a permit/permission?
No permit is needed if you are on public property, not obstructing
anything, not having a large group of people coming (50-100+), and not
marching in the street.
If police ask you to move due to safety concerns, blocking traffic,
exits, etc.., and you donāt want to be detained: be cautious and move.
If you are okay with being detained: please assess the situation, is
your group doing what they say you are doing? Are they going against
what your permit(,if you have one,) says you can do? If itās a āyesā
show them your permit, (if you have one,) or ask for another person to
record, ask them to show the surroundings and ask if the police officer
can say it on recording
Route of your march may be different than planned when you get a permit,
usually due to high traffic or other events. Sound may also be
regulated, (chanting, megaphones, noise makers, etc..,) if it is a
disruption to local business, or living spaces.
I want to get video/photo coverage
You do have the right to photograph anything āin plain view of the
publicā. I would recommend not taking photos of anyone who you havenāt
gotten consent from. If you do take a photo without consent blur all of
their body, including clothes. Police and government heads may be
photographed without consent and blurring
Police may not confiscate, demand to see, or delete your photographs
without a warrant or otherwise court order.
There is a major difference in videotaping and recording audio. Videos
are mostly protected in the US, however audio is regulated depending on
your state or even county

bandages, LOTS of cold water, sugarless sports drinks/electrolyte
packets, cough drops, and a bottle or two of warm water.
Emergency info paper: Write all the phone numbers of close by family and
friends, the national lawyers guild, and all your doctors, including
psych. Write any medications you are currently on, the doses, and your
allergies. Include your legal, and preferred name if you have one, your

Who the police target
Police target those the most with: First aid kits, helmets, gas masks,
megaphone users, people with shields, people with pride flags, POC,
BIPOC, AFAB people, teens, people with bulletproof vests, and people
with numbers on their arms/legs
WARNING: I AM NOT A DOCTOR NOR AN EMT/EMS! I AM SIMPLY A 15 YEAR OLD WHO
READ MANY DOCUMENTS ABOUT STREET MEDICINE! DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND ASK
REAL DOCTORS!!!
Addressing wounds
CONSENT IS IMPORTANT! IF SOMEONE IS NOT IN DANGER OF THEIR LIFE AND THEY
REFUSE HELP: DONāT HELP!
Scraped skin: make sure your hands are clean! Apply pressure if
bleeding, if not bleeding skip straight to cleaning with water then
dabbing with alcohol. After that apply antibiotic gel and wrap it in
bandages, or put a band-aid on.
Burn 1st: Pour cool water on the burn, apply petroleum jelly, then wrap
in bandages.
Dehydration: Ask if they want water or a sports drink. Sugarless sports
drinks are good for replenishing fluids and electrolytes fast! Water is
more likely to have in this situation though, so if you have it, giving
them some wonāt hurt.
Sore throat: cough drops. Actually cough drops. And warm water.
this to show unity among protesters. Typically consists of: black jeans,
black shoes, black gloves, black long sleeve/t-shirt, and a face
covering (balaclava/ski-mask.) This outfit can also include extra
protection, such as: black backpack, black bag, a black helmet, black
swim goggles, safety glasses, and a black respirator
If it has a real chance of turning into a riot: ignore this and go to āA
Guide to Riotsā were there is more information on street medicine.
