NEW TANDY 3000 PERSONAL COMPUTER OFFERS IBM PC/AT
COMPATIBILITY PLUS ENHANCED EXPANDABILITY AND SPEED
FORT WORTH, TEXAS-- Tandy Corporation unveiled the Tandy* 3000
personal computer at its annual shareholders meeting November 14.
"The Tandy 3000 computer offers more expansion capability, increased
speed, and smaller physical size that the IBM@ PC/AT, with which it is
fully compatible," stated Tandy's chairman, CEO and president John V.
Roach. "Priced at only $2599 for a floppy disk system, or $3599 with a
20 megabyte hard disk, it represents the best value yet in the high-
power IBM compatible arena, and it's available now in our Radio Shack
Computer Centers and participating dealers nationwide.
"Tandy's major corporate accounts have been especially anxious to have
this computer available," said Ron G. Stegall, senior vice president of
the company's Business Products Division. "It's a Tandy designed, Tandy
built computer, and we designed it for AT compatibility, and to lead the
market in price/performance and capability."
The Tandy 3000 computer will be sold in two configurations. Both
include one-half megabyte of main memory (512K RAM), expandable to 640K
on the main board, and both will support up to 12 megabytes.
There is room for three, 5-1/4-inch disk drives...either one floppy
drive and two hard drives, or two floppies and one hard drive. The $2599
unit includes a single 1.2 megabyte floppy disk drive. At $3599, the
Tandy 3000HD computer contains a 1.2 megabyte floppy drive and a 20
megabyte hard drive. Optional internal drives will include 1.2 megabyte,
or 360K floppies or a 20 megabyte hard drive.
Owners can choose either of two operating systems. The MS-DOS 3.1,
operating system will be available at introduction, and includes support
for Tandy's ViaNet& local area network. In the second quarter of 1986,
the XENIX 5.0 operating system will allow two to six simultaneous users
on the system.
The computer uses the Intel 80286 microprocessor, operating at 8
megahertz, 33.3 percent faster than the PC/AT. The Tandy 3000 Deluxe
Graphics Adapter displays the standard IBM CGA modes as well as
additional modes, including 640 x 400 two-color and 640 x 200 16-color,
using Tandy's outstanding non-interlaced, flicker-free monitors.
Standard features include a real time clock with battery backup, a
serial/parallel adapter, PC/AT compatible keyboard, and a provision for
an optional plug-in 80287 math co-processor.
A full range of options will be supported through ten expansion card
slots, eight of which are open in the standard computer.
Tandy's most powerful personal computer measures 6.5 x 19.0 x 18.0
inches. It rounds out one of the most complete MS-DOS computer lines in
the marketplace, including the Tandy 1000, 1200 and 2000 commputes, all
of which are available in both floppy and hard-drive versions.
Tandy business computers are serviced and supported by more than 60
dedicated Business Products Service Centers, and Area Training and
Support Centers nationwide...the largest support network offered by any
personal computer manufacturer. Available are carry-in and on-site
service contracts, walk-in service, "hot line" and on-site consultation
services, installation and orientation for new users, and user training.
