I just dropped in the AMD 80C287 into my T1K TL/2 and was pleasantly surprised
when my math calcs increased from 30K whetstones to 201K whetstones. The beauty
of it all is that it is a CMOS chip and draws little current and will work in
the range of 8-12 MHz. After 15 minutes the chip was cool to the touch. The
chip is on sale for $99 from Advanced Micro Devices (1-800-888-5590). Pounce on
it!!!

    Thanks for the word on the $99 AMD 80C287. It arrived today and I found
a best case improvement in speed (a satelite tracking program - orbital
mechanics is a real number cruncher) of 7 to 1. My T4000 loves it, but I'm
suffering a little guilt - I've got stock in Intel.

Shame on you for owning stock in company that is kicking around poor little
AMD! AMD makes the 286 chip in my TL/2 and made the 8088 in my older SX.
Anyway, buying AMD's 80C287 is sweet revenge.<g> I didn't know that the T4K's
used 80287's. I thought you needed the 80387?

    As best I can tell, it's AMD that's kicking Intel in the shins. <g>
They seem to have done nicely second-sourcing Intel chips - now they're
just skipping the legal formalities. Maybe it's time Intel broke down and
started licensing the 287 and the 386/7!.
    The 4000 could never make up its mind what coprocessor to use. The
original version carried sockets for the 287 and the Weitek, but didn't
support the Weitek without modification. The result is a 386 machine with
287 math, but the software doesn't seem to care.
    With this and the recent Tent Sale, etc, my 4000 doesn't know what hit
it. For three years the case hasn't even been opened. Now it has a new
operating system (Coherent), a coprocessor, two additional serial ports,
and a memory board awaiting another 2 megs of memory. Now I've just got to
justify all this.

Call AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) at 1-800-888-5590. I ordered one for my
1000TL and really speeds up math calculations. It's a nice chip.

Yes, you can get an 8087 for the SX these days for about $85. If you are
running Lotus 2.01 or 2.2, it makes use of the chip and runs considerably
faster. You can also get a number of good VGA cards. I've got a Boca SuperVGA,
which is essentially a drop-in. Check out the September issue of PCM for a good
rundown on VGA cards that you can use in the SX.
