Modern Life and Self Reliance

Modern life is unfulfilling. The endless luxuries we seek, such as

phones, expensive clothing, and material possessions, are nothing but a

meaningless attempt to make ourselves happy. However, this does not make

us happy, it makes us numb to the idea of happiness. You are not joyful,

you are merely distracted.

Nature can give us all we need, if you don’t believe that, look at the

animals. Specifically, you can look at a bird. Birds only need 3 things

to survive: a nest, worms, and water.

On the subject of nests, ALL humans need shelter; one that warms you in

the winter and cools you in the summer. If that’s all we really need,

then a small cabin would suffice.

So, if a modest and simple cabin is all you need for shelter, why do

modern humans rent apartments? The modern man is bunched up in noisy,

overpopulated cities. Take New York city as an example. The New Yorkers

have to pay thousands of dollars per month to stay inside. Even if they

could afford it, the incessant noise and bright lights make it

impossible to sleep. As with many things in the modern world, you have

to pay to be miserable.

On the subject of worms, ALL humans need food. This food needs to be

clean and healthy. The specific food you eat depends on your location.

(An Alaskan could hunt Moose for meat, while an Appalachian could Black

Bears for meat) But in general, humans can live off one meal a day, this

meal should subsist of meat from animals you’ve hunted, (could be any

animal) berries you’ve foraged for, and some sort of vegetable or fruit

you’ve either foraged for, (like the berries) or grown in a small

garden.

So, if all humans need is one healthy meal a day, then why are modern

humans over-eating unhealthy food? Almost half of the United States

population is overweight. The poor man who cannot afford food either

starves, or takes handouts and suffers from the dissatisfaction he gets

for not being self-reliant.

On the subject of water, ALL humans need water. You cannot live without

it. If I recall correctly, the human body can only survive 3 days

without some form of hydration. The only qualifications for quality

drinking water is that it’s clean. You can get water by collecting

rainfall in bottles or buckets or you could go to a stream or lake.

(make sure to boil the water over a fire for at least 1 minute)

So, if all humans need is clean water, then why are modern humans paying

for it in plastic bottles? We need water to live, so instead of being

self-reliant and collecting and/or finding water, we go and spend a

dollar 50 (sometimes more) on Great Value, Evian, Core, Smart water, or

any other brand that sells the exact same thing. It’s not only harmful

to the environment, it’s plain stupid.

In conclusion, we must only focus on the necessities of life. Do not buy

into the false notion you can only be happy through material objects.

The modern world makes us depressed and we

“fill” that void with luxury. Live simply. Instead of buying, hunt for

your food, search for your water, and build your shelter. Reject

civilization, embrace self-reliance.
