Processional
September 28, 2020
when small, the processional was one of words
that decorum was a decoration and a weapon
to be picked up as one willed, and set down when done
that dignity was the sort of thing you might get out of a cat
and when facing dignity, one should expect
sharp
that the knives, like any good steel
should be cleaned carefully, then
not left to drip, but softly hand dried
and oiled
that good cast iron and the shotgun
were both ideal for putting paid to burglars
and neither should ever see soap
for one, wire, the other a cloth
and both more oil
all things in their season
until one must burn it off
that you respect your kill
by eating and using all the parts you can
save that which claims human
and then, be silent
that under watchful eye
lay guise of comfortable motion
attention and redirect, where success
kept the war cold
that comfortable isolation and clean living
washing hands, brass knobs, and sand
held death at bay, at least a little while
that life was a system of attrition
and teaching, passing it on
was highest style
