the very first rule I ever learned
was turn around �� don ��t destroy yourself upon that hill
when the mountain comes for you �� and it will
patient chill remember
whether summit or battle
or stranger still �� the war we waste unknowing
to sup on bitter swill �� the pride of fixed bayonets
towards ten below December
the very first rule I ever burned
was turn around �� deployed myself in standing kiln
split the glaze asunder �� and where pass could kill
belatedly ripped thunder
that avalanche might press in tight
that cavalcade in all its might
horse and carriage layered under
embraced in patient wonder
the very first rule I ever turned
stone in enemy heart, my own
around, around, and stuttered
