we know, and have known, that torture doesn ��t work
that systematic interrogation is most effective
by gaining trust, social leverage, and reward
basic positive operant conditioning
combined with well-reasoned analysis
most reliably produces actionable intelligence
we likewise know that lying
something we ��d prefer those we interrogate to avoid
escalates patterns of distrust
calling a method enhanced interrogation
falsifies our actions and dishonors us
renders us untrustworthy
while we ask someone utterly helpless
to please be kind enough
to save us
possibly from ourselves
