!! POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD !!
This is a movie I've had on my list for a hot minute. It stars James Franco as Saul and Seth Rogen as Dale as they bumble and smoke their way out of every improbable situation while on the run from a drug kingpin. This is a movie I remember everyone around me talking about when it came out, and I get I kind of see why.
The plot of the movie is pretty straight forward and I actually quite enjoyed it. I like stories where two big bads think the moron protagonist is more competent than they actually are. The character of Saul grew on me throughout the movie. James Franco plays a great pothead and as the movie progresses his naivety makes him more endearing and I was actively rooting for him to not only survive but actually succeed by the end.
Dale on the other hand I very much disliked. He's a process server who gets the story going when he witnesses one of the drug kingpins commit murder. I was immediately turned off by the character when he says he'd dating a high schooler. His character in the movie is 24 or 25, and I was just grossed out by that. Maybe that's the reaction they wanted, but it just coloured everything else he did in an unfavourable light. On top of that I find his character quite annoying. He's constantly yelling and his over-the-top physicality just isn't my jam.
Another character in the movie that I actually liked a lot was Danny McBride's character Red. I found him hilarious and his schtick of getting shot multiple times and just not dying was really funny. There were also some fun cameos from Ken Jeong and Bobby Lee about halfway through the movie that were a nice surprise.
I will say that though this movie was just under two hours long, I won't dock it points for being over ninety minutes. This movie was action packed from start to finish and made the most of every minute. If you haven't seen it I definitely think it's worth a watch.
