Discovering New Music

Over the years, I began to lean heavily into discovering music through Spotify's suggestions, radios, and playlists. I almost don't remember how I discovered new music before Spotify. But now that I'm on this journey of removing Spotify from my life, I've been disocvering and re-discovering how I can find the new, quirky music I love.

The Needledrop

Anthony Fantano, the internet's busiest music nerd, is the first place I go when I'm looking for new music recommendations. He reviews all kinds of music from pretty much all genres, so I'm often introduced to weird and fantastic albums and artists I would have never heard of otherwise. I also appreciate how thorough his reviews are, allowing me to get a sense of what I should expect from an album before I even listen to it myself.

I've liked almost every album he's rated highly, so it's usually a safe bet when he recommends an album or song in a genre I'm into. It's been a while since I listened to his reviews regularly, so going through his back catalogue of recommendations and reviews has been really enjoyable.

Bandcamp Radio

In the Bandcamp app, they have a Bandcamp radio section with curated radio stations for a variety of genres. The great thing about Bandcamp radio is that they provide you with a direct link to the songs being played so you can explore the artist's other work or the complete album without leaving the app.

Internet Radio

As I listen to more internet radio, I'm finding more artists to explore. I find radio is most helpful for music discovery in genres that I'm newer to or have been out of the loop on for a number of years. Some stations provide you with the song name and artist while others do not. SomaFM provides that information for all their stations and that's been really helpful.

Music Publications

Another source for music discovery I've re-engaged with is music publications. Sources I am currently reading are Pitchfork, AV Club, and Dummy Mag. I'm sure there are plenty others that I may include here later on, but these three publications have been my primary sources so far.
