Interesting times with farm animals

We went for a walk in the early evening. At one point the path went through a field that was empty last time we were there. Today there were cattle.

More specifically, I think they were bullocks. We walked thorugh the field a little gingerly. Two of them were right by the path, seemed interested in us, and walked up to us. They were pretty big close up. We moved slowly so as not to spook them, and let them sniff us. Then we walked slowly away and they watched us leave.

The rest of the walk was pleasant but uneventful. Some people asked me if I knew the history of the pill boxes in the fields. I said they were defences from the second world war. They seemed happy with that.

On the way back, we had to go through the field of cattle again. Some of them were standing in the stream. Some of them were right by the path again. One in particular wanted... something? He didn't come right up to us, but every time we walked on a few paces, so did he. When we stopped, he stopped. Then he did a little frisky jump. Worrying. We thought about heading towards a tree. But now the others were taking notice. Cattle stolled towards us from all directions. They didn't get too close. One or two reached out their heads and sniffed me. We walked on slowly and so did they. We had a crowd of them following us, and again, when we stopped, so did they. As we crossed the field we collected more and more of them, until by the time we go to the stile into the next field they were all standng watching us climb over. Then they stood by the fence and watched us walk away.

It was a pretty unnerving experience. We'd crossed most of the field holding hands for moral support, and my heart rate was pretty high.

We got in the car and drove away. We saw the people who'd asked about history. I think they must have gone through the same field to get to where we saw them. And they had a small dog.
