Staying in Orbit (♊)

by Kelson Vibber, March 9, 2021

I'm still sorting out to what extent Gemini really differs from just making and seeking out minimalist websites, aside from the technical barriers to entry at this stage. But I'm intrigued enough to stick around for now.

I'm trying to write some new posts here that aren't just about Gemini. I've also been manually converting some of my older blog posts (and a few random pages from my website) in order to get a feel for what does and doesn't work well as Gemtext.

Update: Then again, FiXato has some cool ideas about gallery implementations.

No, I don't plan on mirroring my entire website in Gemini space! Only the parts that make sense. And I may rethink the structure as I bring things over. I've been tossing almost everything into one blog or another for years, which is convenient for posting, but not exactly organized.

For instance, as I was converting some posts on tech troubleshooting, I realized that they're really a collection of articles by topic, not time - so I created a separate section of my capsule for tech tips instead of adding them to the gemlog:

Tech How-Tos and Troubleshooting

I think I will try to convert all my commentary on Les Misérables. It's mostly text and built from Markdown templates using Eleventy. It seems like it ought to be possible to build a Gemini site from the same source.

Re-Reading Les Misérables

Update (Mar. 21): I have converted it to Gemini!

Anyway, I plan to write on varied topics here, just like I do on my blog, probably cross-posting some and keeping others to just one medium or the other.
