Hello. I chose the nickname Sardonyx because a) it is a real word, b) it sounds like sardonic, and c) it ends with an x which is eXtremely cool, of course. I guess you can tell I'm a guy who grew up in a time where lots of things were Xtreme (a couple decades ago).
Welcome to the first post in my first gemlog. It is not my first blog. That was a LiveJournal I had in 2003 or 2004. I didn't keep up with it. (It would be nice to read it, but I have forgotten its content, my password, and even the email address I signed up with. Yeah, it was probably crap, but unless I re-read my old posts, I don't know that for certain.)
Facebook was exciting when I was in college, mostly because of the exclusivity it had then. Being an early adopter of tech, and convinced it would enhance my social status, I signed up as soon as it was offered at my university. (I'm older and a little wiser now.) When Facebook introduced their Notes (blog-like) feature, I sent a few missives. However, it was even more short lived than my LiveJournal. I have always preferred a pseudonymous, traditional blog approach.
Hosting my own blog or gemlog on my own server has been a goal of mine for awhile. With this approach, you can really prove the truth of the adage "If you want something done right, do it yourself." You're not shackled to the whims of Facebook or LiveJournal or other capricious, impersonal corporations.
At least, that's the idea. Before I can even attempt (and screw up) such a project (with no one but myself to blame) I always have fallen into the trap of yak shaving (strange phrase? look that one up on Wikipedia). Maybe in this case it's bike shedding (this phrase too)? With your own server, there are so many choices to make. VPS, static, dynamic, framework, language, database, caching, comments, uptime, security, backups, and on and on and on. It's analysis paralysis with questions that lead to other questions, even moral or aesthetic questions. (Should I use software X that gives me a feature I want? Oh no, it's written in an ugly programming language.)
Thus, even though I have enough money and (a little bit of) time, I have yet to actually achieve that goal. I still believe it will happen, but life goes on in the interim. So I have started this gemlog on gemlog.blue with the intent to keep this going until I own my own plot of gemini-space.
