monolalia → The Cliplog

What’s a cliplog? A microblog taken straight from the X11 clipboard and updated with a keyboard shortcut. Maybe it doesn’t really deserve a name of its own…

Mon 09 January 2023 09:12:21 UTC

Bought the 3rd and 4th Black Sabbath on CD after listening to them on Spotify Premium. I’m not Modern-People-ing correctly, I think

The Perpetuum Immobile. The Wheels of Standstill busily rearrange the world to keep you in your place as you scramble up that hill…

Now my personal mythology has another devil next to the Entropy Wolves that you can only begin to see once they’ve eaten all the light of the universe

Me before Strange New Worlds: "Wah! Discovery is not true to #StarTrek and Burnham never stops drama-whispering!"

Me after Strange New Worlds: "Wah! #StrangeNewWorlds is so much safer than #Discovery and doesn’t boldly go at all!"

Christmas can be hard. If you’re alone, if you’re feeling alienated or excluded from the warmth and cheer and togetherness, if you’re half-buried under failures or holiday stress…

I want to send you ((hugs)) and what <3 love I have to give and tell you you are not alone in this. *We* are not alone in this.

And now is not the time to condemn yourself. Try not to flee what daylight there is. Don’t busy your mind holding all your sorrows and pain at once, to be evaluated and despaired over time and time again… try, just try, to step out from those long shadows you’ve grown. The present moment can be enough for now. The small things, the little joys, maybe some you’ve almost forgotten, you big grim adult, you!… and maybe that’s vague self-help babble, and I can clearly not heal myself either.

But this fool here wishes you peace. ^^

How on earth do you know when something you’re tippety-typing away about is no longer just a note to be kept with other notes and/or in a note-taking application and needs to be moved into a proper P.R.O.J.E.C.T. folder…?

I hate how even the most “free” cartoon dogs are inevitably depicted with collars. I also hate funny livestock animals. It’s unnecessarily punching down the food chain.

I find it a little weird when people say they’re “owned” by their cats. Unless we’re talking farm/village/outdoors cats, the adorable floofs are ultimately entirely dependent on you.

Yes, I do take things too literally, why?

Sun 18 September 2022 10:37:34 UTC

Does anyone else experience confusing menus or an overabundance of title and interstitial screens and intros and logos as an efficient deterrent when it comes to even starting a video game? Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is one of the worst offenders in my library, along with Capcom Arcade Stadium, Mega Drive Classics, Zaccharia Pinball, Atari Vault… maybe all those "simulated arcades/living rooms" but even that could be implemented with far fewer extra steps. And the logo plague is universal…

Thu 15 September 2022 11:48:18 UTC

So the inverse colour characters on the Commodore 8-bit machines are in fact not generated from the regular 128 chars but are simply characters 129-256 (or 128-255 if you will) and thus redefinable. My dream of a plus/4 Ultima-lite RPG with reasonably sized character tile graphics is not entirely dead

The world becomes less scary when I think of it as just a giant classroom. The lower-brow tough normie kids with their blunt, open contempt and ridicule and the odd seriousness of their silly hostility; the activist kids with their ironic and sarcastic remarks, barely predictable offence-taking, and conditional acceptance; the straight-A overachievers who barely recognise your existence; the fellow outcasts who don’t necessarily like you (or you them) but are the ones who’ll have you…

I read that book; was interesting; have little to no personal experience with the male milieus she immersed herself in.

Not sure you can just conclude that that’s what drove her to end her life, even if she described these experiences as eye-opening and harrowing (and felt guilty about deceiving people).

Three score miles and ten.

Can I get there by candle-light?

Yes, and back again…

If your heels are nimble and your toes are light,

You may get there by candle-light.”

It MEANS “before it gets dark (and you light the candles)” but I rather like the idea of asking if it is a place you can get to by the light of a candle (and possibly neither more nor less than that)

Booklog: Remembrance of Earth’s Past, by Liu Cixin

I’m not going to call her his “sex doll” just because he ordered her from his fantasies into his life; longing & smitten-ness are made of more than rutting. Luo/the book?/its author? may have a sexist streak (proof of which this margin is 2small2contain); so do often the publicly fairest, most enlightened humans’ private needs, for social & innocent biological reasons. For them I prescribe self-aware fatalist acceptance; for the book… idk

Sun 28 August 2022 19:52:52 UTC

Booklog: Remembrance of Earth’s Past, by Liu Cixin

Later, Mr Luo, given immense powers as an unpredictable analysis-proof “Wallfacer”, requisitions a real-life version of said dream woman. The way Da Shi knows exactly what he means & finds him a woman right out of his daydreams rather outweighs the disbelief I can suspend… (but I suppose there is a type that “does” it, if not in practice then at a daydream level. Sensitive, intelligent, imaginative, utterly open & innocent & petite & delicate & protective-instincts-rousing; a Bambi Pixie Dream Girl)

So second book’s love-unbelieving main guy Luo Ji at the behest of his love-believing, YA-novels-writing girlfriend dreams up the perfect woman and to his own astonishment 1. falls in love with this imaginary creature 2. goes on a road trip with her because she’s just that real to him. … Is that an option? Asking for a friend. Oh, the friend has aphantasia.

How (non-)sensical is this whole business of unfolding a subatomic particle’s dimensions from M-theory’s eleven down tosix, three, two…? The Trisolarans unfold a proton to two dimension to inscribe integrated circuits on its now immense surface, turning it into a particle-sized computer that can conveniently be accelerated to near the speed of light… is a two-dimensional object even possible in three-dimensional space? Wouldn’t it have… no substance?

So, watched RMC’s video on the VecFever. I hadn’t realised colour vector arcade games like Atari’s Star Wars used CRTs with shadow masks, costing them some of that cleanness and vibrancy associated with vector displays. I wonder if MAME on a high-res LCD isn’t actually closer to what I imagined them like — or the monochrome Vectrex displat, for that matter?

Booklog: I Never Promised You A Rose Garden, by Joanne Greenberg (as Hannah Green)

She got up in the very doomed, dramatic way she had and left them, and Lactamaeon, second in command of Yr, whispered, “If one is to be doomed, one must be beautiful, or the drama is only a comedy. And therefore, Unbeautiful…”

“Kill me, my lord, in the form of an eagle,” Deborah said to him in the language of Yr.

What do you call a moon of a moon? We could use note values.

Quaver = planet

Semiquaver = moon

Demisemiquaver = moon of moon

Hemidemisemiquaver = moon of moon of moon…

And then also bubble up from quaver to…

Crotchet = barycentre with sibling planets, if any

Minim = parent star

Semibreve = star’s barycentre with sibling stars, if any

Breve = centre of galaxy

Longa = galaxy’s parent galaxy, if any

Maxima = A WHOLE FRICKIN’ UNIVERSE

It wouldn’t get confusing at all

There should be some sort of loungey, living-roomy place-to-hang-out-at for queer/ace/trans/kinky/whatnot types (the types could vary daily) where you could just relax/read/game/draw/crochet/write/code/cuddle/stare off into space, and you wouldn’t *have* to make contact with anyone, but if you did (would?) want to socialise, you’d know you’d have some specific thing in common, at least in a broader sense (in practice this can mean bugger all), and you wouldn’t have to justify or explain it

Today I learned an “open relationship” is just getting to have sex with other people whom you’re not dating and don’t love. So for me that would be _worse_ than monogamy. But I guess my partner would be welcome to it to take the sex pressure off me. 😕 The priorities of people with sex drives are strange and frustrating.

Polyamory is the desirable one.

Non patimini beluas pessum atterere vos = Don’t let the brutes/beasts grind you down/into ruin

Nolite pati beluas pessum atterere vos = You don’t want to let the brutes/beasts grind you down/into ruin (if you’re attached to the “Nolite”)

NOTE: This might be gibberish. Don’t use on actual Latinians.

Mon 27 June 2022 18:06:16 UTC

I just invented guidelines for life

1. That banning/mandating/regulating (something) would make life nicer in some regard is not sufficient reason to actually do so.

2. Don’t be heartless. Maybe not everyone’s fighting some hard battle you’re just not privy to, but it’s more common than you know, and it’s not just the people you like.

3. You wouldn’t treat anyone else this badly, so why are you doing it to yourself?

4. You can change and be things you currently aren’t. You aren’t in any “hardwired” way cursed or excluded from life.

5. It’s easy to be a saint in paradise or a devil in hell. Would you be equally good under all circumstances?

6. If life gives you lemons, you can still just go explore the universe.

7. Consider how much the media get wrong about the stuff you know. How much do they get wrong about the stuff you don’t know? And how much might “your side” get wrong about “the other side”?

8. An it harm none, do as thou art told. (Okay, that one’s a semiprivate joke)

9. The truth doesn’t care about your feelings, but stuff’s not true just because it hurts.

Watched Dune at last. I’m… really disappointed? “Desert power” *rolls eyes*… how anachronistic (for the world of Dune)! People sound mundane, present-day-ish, and largely uninvolved. Nothing has colour. There's little grandeur or sense of a rich cultural heritage — just this grey desaturated utilitarian military flavour to all but the spice-blue eyes. Of course the David Lynch movie had the opulence cranked up to eleven for House Atreidis and the Corrinos, but it did at least show off more of the Dune universe and made it quite clear that it was a very different age and world. Edric’s (the Guild navigator) visit to the Emperor with his news of Ix (the meaning of which would be lost to anyone unfamiliar with the book) certainly helped “weirdify” Dune as well. Oh, well. It can only get more interesting as the story picks up pace in future movies. Right?

OKCwestions, pt. 3

Q: Would you like to see companies embrace gender(-)neutral German?

A: Not until there actually is such a thing as gender-neutral German. In my maybe not so humble opinion, the current incarnation with the "gender star/colon/underscore" is no better than the generic masculine. While it frequently works out in the singular (apart from the "*" confusing the normies), plurals like "Ärzt*innen" or "Professor*innen" really just inject an asterisk into the feminine form: "Ärzt" doesn't mean anything, and "Professor" isn't the intended masculine plural form either. Using the asterisk as in set theory or like a DOS-/UNIX-style wildcard won't help with that either; the wildcard doesn't work like that. And the nerd and pedant in me is bothered by that. I think the slash thing or mentioning both was better even if it took up more space ("Ärzte/Ärztinnen", "Ärztinnen und Ärzte").

But imagine reading a book that has only one sentence per page, with some of the pages containing nothing but “…”. That's what the *gameplay* is like. Goes for dialogue sequences in JRPGs, too. Agents of SHIELD: If it weren't for the whole being-evil thing, I could think of much worse than being mind-controlled by a parasite that gives you a purpose, inhabits the pleasure centres of your brain, and takes some of that stupid decision-making out of your hand. #porn

Q: If you had to guess, do you think humans will go extinct in the next 1000 years?

A: They're resourceful little buggers. They will hang on for way longer than that, even if it might not be by the billions. Think about what this would require: billions of individuals from a resourceful and technologically inventive species ALL gone with not even one "Adam and Eve" combo remaining, and be it in abject misery, in highly artificial surroundings, in the last patch of uncontacted tribal territory on earth, in an underground bunker, on Mars, or in the Google AI's petting zoo.

Reworked yesterdays Commodore TED/264 retrospective a tad, as I am wont to do…

I’d like a gemini browser to automatically generate a different colour scheme for every server/host/idk – like Lagrange does it for the headlines, but for everything…

Been working on a little ASCII-art-to-Unicode-art converter. :) A simple project but it's nice to have something actually useful taking shape.

First version of a new cursive script with German-specific extensions ready — addressing, I hope, some of the flaws of þe olde Sütterlin. Now it’ll need “flow optimisation”…

Been over a week that I merged XDG_CONFIG_HOME and XDG_DATA_HOME, still no issues :)

Learned some C with ncurses. 1985, here I come! <3

Yoiks, was operating with about 20% of my mind on the Trine stream and finding it enormously funny that nothing made any sense…

Booklog: The Child Garden, By Geoff Ryman

...people photosynthesise with purple skin to save scant food, die at 35 (another side-effect of wiping out cancer, who'd have thought!), and have knowledge, memories, desirable behaviour and skills imparted by viruses -- yet it doesn't feel half bad, because it also means there's no need for locks, police, fear of walking alone in the dark; everything just seems to be running itself without having guns pointed at it; life's... not easy, but informal

Booklog: The Child Garden, By Geoff Ryman

It plays on all the senses without ever feeling indulgently hedonist or 'purple'. It'll manage to gross you out *adoringly*. Huge genetically engineered antarctic miners (polar bears) who you'd expect to be an oppressed underclass are a rugged wealthy separate culture that'll take the mickey out of us squishy mind-controlled normies; the eradication of cancer let tumours replicate the host body so well as to produce immortal deformed-looking copies...

Booklog: The Child Garden, By Geoff Ryman

Been finding it hard to booklog; it's still what I'd love to have written but so dense with ideas to process and integrate into an internal coherent model -- melancholically playful, whimsical when it should be creeping you out; a dystopia you (sometimes) half want to live in...

Mon 01 March 2021 22:34:00 UTC

Have merged XDG_CONFIG_HOME and XDG_DATA_HOME into one, since developers barely know when to use which as it is. Nothing's fallen over dead yet, not even Akonadi…

Not sure what to do with Gemini, really. You put stuff out there and then that's that; silence. Might be in a bad mood though

No more dead links; + some a first few old texts posted to the Gemini thang.

Soundlog: Risk of Rain 2 (OST), by Chris Christodoulou

…whose name I surprisingly got right on the first attempt. I forgot I was slightly obsessed with this album! If a psychedelic prog-tech sort of thing sorts like your jam, jam to this.

Five guest musicians (Edward KaSpel, IAMX, Otto von Schirach, Traz Damji, Soriah); bodes well.

Soundlog: Resonance, by cEvin Key and the Subconscious Electronic Orchestra

Out now! :) :) Advance tracks were brilliant, Anger is an Acid quite likely to remain my high point of the album...

Fri 19 February 2021 12:42:23 UTC

It's time for that old outburst of anger again, because I can't view a single German website without losing my temper any more. YOU. UTTER. FICKING. AR$€HOLES. DESTROYED. THE. FREE. OPEN. DEMOCRATIC. LIBERTINE. INTERNET with your regulations. That "Datenschutzerklaerung" and that "Impressum" demand a level of self-exposure (self-doxxing, really) and legalese-compliance that a decently-sized business may be able to deal with but not an intimidateable individual with a need for privacy and a hunger to find the other weirdos of the world. BURN IN HELL YOU SHITS.

Booklog: The Child Garden, by Geoff Ryman

I’ll have to talk fragmentarily about this book while I’m reading it. It's the sort of colourfully imaginative but grounded-feeling life-as-an-XYZ-sort-of-creature-detailing "soft" sci-fi I'd want to write if I wanted to take up the responsibility of writing sci-fi, that is to say, to presume to be able to speculate with some level of plausibility.
