Institute’s wait for a league win continues as they were held to a draw

by Ads at the Brandywell on Saturday.

‘Stute have now gone eight league games without a win, going back to

November when they defeated HW Welders at the Brandywell. One Irish Cup

win over Annagh aside, the winning touch has deserted the Blues, who

struggled to produce many chances of note against a stubborn opponent.

‘Stute boss Brian Donaghey had been busy in the build up to the game,

signing three new players, two of which went straight into the starting

eleven. Former Foyle Harps striker Calvin McCallion and former ‘Stute

striker Sean McCarron both joined from Dergview to significantly boost

the team’s attacking department. Shaun McDermott also joined from

Ballinamallard, but had to make do with a place on the bench as ‘Stute

looked for their first league win since November.

After a slow start to the game, Ards should have taken the lead on 19

minutes when a simple long ball over the top from Kyle Calderwood gave

Adam Salley a run on goal. Shaun Leppard did his best to put the

striker under pressure, but Salley still had the edge, but he couldn’t

provide the finish, hooking wide of Dylan Doherty’s goal.

‘Stute were then gifted the lead on 34 minutes thanks to a howler from

visiting goalkeeper Alex Moore. There seemed no danger when defender

Karl Hamill headed high back to his team mate, but Moore spilled the

ball right into the path of McCallion, who showed great composure

before picking his spot past two defenders on the line for a debut

goal.

Unfortunately for McCallion and ‘Stute, the lead was gone in the blink

of an eye as Ards equalised on their very next attack. It was a classy

goal from the visitors as Ethan Taggart’s cross was hooked on first

time by Salley right onto the head of Patrick Cafolla who headed in

from close range. ‘Stute’s lead had lasted just three minutes.

Half Time 1-1

‘Stute had goalkeeper Doherty to thank for keeping the scores level

within two minutes of the restart. Eamonn Scannell intercepted a pass

in midfield and led Ards on an attack, playing the ball to Ethan

Taggart, who cut onto his left foot and attempted to curl the ball into

the corner. But the striker was denied by a brilliant save from

Doherty, who just got enough on the ball with his right hand to take

the ball wide for a corner.

‘Stute, who had lost just once at the Brandywell in the last 10 games

in all competitions, were not at their best by any means despite the

reinforcements in attack, ad they really struggled to test the Ads

defence throughout the second half.

The introduction of Jamie McCormick finally brought an element of

threat for ‘Stute, who began to play and they almost had their second

goal on 80 minutes when the substitute gave McCallion a great ball to

run onto, but just when it looked as if he would sidestep the

goalkeeper to score, Greg Hall got a foot on the ball to take it behind

for a corner.

Donaghey added Oisin Devlin and new midfielder McDermott to the game as

‘Stute pushed for the win in the closing stages, and Sean McCarron

created a chance for himself with a superb touch to set himself up, but

he was well off target from 20 yards.

‘Stute pushed hard in the closing stages, and a late corner gave them

hope of sneaking a late winner, but, once again, it wasn’t to be for

‘Stute, who would give anything for a win at this stage.
