2020-11-04T00:02:08 #kisslinux <midfavila> ...which reminds me, I really need to get a DB-25 to DE-9 converter for my null-modem cable. having a laptop connected as a terminal to my PC would be super useful
2020-11-04T00:02:54 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> your laptop must be really old if it has a serial connector
2020-11-04T00:03:02 #kisslinux <midfavila> well, yes, but also on
2020-11-04T00:03:03 #kisslinux <midfavila> no*
2020-11-04T00:03:13 #kisslinux <midfavila> my laptop is from 2006, but even the most recent models have two serial connectors
2020-11-04T00:03:19 #kisslinux <midfavila> Getac B300.
2020-11-04T00:03:49 #kisslinux <midfavila> for a fourteen year old laptop it's still pretty punchy
2020-11-04T00:04:23 #kisslinux <midfavila> four gigs of RAM, L7500 Core 2 Duo, 1280x1024 resistive touch screen, SATA II (I think?), etc
2020-11-04T00:04:31 #kisslinux <midfavila> only downside is that parts are pricey
2020-11-04T00:04:36 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> if you got enough ram and an SSD linux with musl should run just fine
2020-11-04T00:04:44 #kisslinux <midfavila> Yeah dude.
2020-11-04T00:04:56 #kisslinux <midfavila> I used to run MX on it for school since I needed a distro that Just Werked at the time
2020-11-04T00:05:08 #kisslinux <midfavila> was able to handle everything flawlessly, save in-browser video playback on youtube
2020-11-04T00:05:11 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> MX?
2020-11-04T00:05:37 #kisslinux <midfavila> oh, it's a Debian-based distro that provides a choice of init and a preconfigured XFCE environment out of the box
2020-11-04T00:05:47 #kisslinux <midfavila> targetted at intermediate users
2020-11-04T00:06:05 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> i found that LXDE is a lot less resource-hungry than XFCE
2020-11-04T00:06:17 #kisslinux <midfavila> yeah, it is, but long story short I don't have a hard drive for this thing
2020-11-04T00:06:22 #kisslinux <midfavila> or to be more specific I don't have a caddy
2020-11-04T00:06:25 #kisslinux <midfavila> since they're like 200$
2020-11-04T00:06:28 #kisslinux <midfavila> which is bullshit
2020-11-04T00:06:34 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> ^_^
2020-11-04T00:06:38 #kisslinux <midfavila> and it's too old to support mSATA
2020-11-04T00:06:56 #kisslinux <midfavila> my next laptop will likely be a CF-C2
2020-11-04T00:07:43 #kisslinux <midfavila> because, god, they're just so sexy
2020-11-04T00:07:49 #kisslinux <midfavila> it's like everything I want in a laptop
2020-11-04T00:08:24 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> i got a 2018 8core i7 laptop in the shelf, using the 2009 model instead
2020-11-04T00:08:30 #kisslinux <midfavila> based
2020-11-04T00:08:35 #kisslinux <midfavila> modern laptops are garbage
2020-11-04T00:08:36 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> because i cant stand the screen
2020-11-04T00:09:45 #kisslinux <trav27412> glossy touchpad crap?
2020-11-04T00:09:56 #kisslinux <trav27412> touchscreen*
2020-11-04T00:10:12 #kisslinux <midfavila> honestly the biggest problems I have with modern laptops are... not really in order, but the keyboards are gross, they're far too thin and impossible to repair/upgrade, and the use of 16:9 instead of 4:3 displays messes with me
2020-11-04T00:10:42 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> no, it's matte, but when i look at it for more than 10 mins my eyes start watering
2020-11-04T00:10:44 #kisslinux <travankor> agreed 100%
2020-11-04T00:11:15 #kisslinux <midfavila> nuclear take but 1600x1200 on a fifteen inch screen is perfect for laptops
2020-11-04T00:11:20 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> i suspect it's due to the rapid LED on-off cycle
2020-11-04T00:13:12 #kisslinux <travankor> could be PWM
2020-11-04T01:17:47 #kisslinux <midfavila> man, on the topic of monitors
2020-11-04T01:17:56 #kisslinux <midfavila> just manually calibrated three of them by eye
2020-11-04T01:18:01 #kisslinux <midfavila> talk about a pain
2020-11-04T01:18:27 #kisslinux <midfavila> takes a good twenty to thirty minutes to run them through the full gamut of tests each and get the right settings
2020-11-04T01:55:33 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> what prog do you use for that?
2020-11-04T01:55:44 #kisslinux <midfavila> I don't use any programs.
2020-11-04T01:56:01 #kisslinux <midfavila> There's a set of pages on the net that run you through diagnostics and stuff.
2020-11-04T01:56:12 #kisslinux <midfavila> and then I go through and manually adjust each setting on each monitor
2020-11-04T01:56:32 #kisslinux <midfavila> there are probably better ways to do it, but I'm not someone who edits photos or anything. I just like pretty pictures = w=
2020-11-04T03:28:49 #kisslinux <dylanaraps> o/
2020-11-04T03:28:57 #kisslinux <dylanaraps> E5ten: Will add the checks, thanks
2020-11-04T03:51:13 #kisslinux <midfavila> so hey, I hate to bug you all, but I'm having these really weird networking issues and after 45 minutes of troubleshooting, I'm about at my wit's end.
2020-11-04T03:53:21 #kisslinux <midfavila> normally I have a static IP assigned to my desktop, and my /etc/resolv.conf is just two lines right now... "domain lan n nameserver 1.1.1.1". according to ifconfig and route, the interface has a valid IP address, and the default gateway is set to my router, as expected. grepping dmesg for anything related to enp or eth comes up with nothing unusual either
2020-11-04T03:54:17 #kisslinux <midfavila> I made sure to check if I can get any sort of connection out there too, and I can successfully curl pages, establish ssh connections and whatnot, but only with IP addresses; any time I use a URL, I get that DNS failure
2020-11-04T03:54:23 #kisslinux <midfavila> i'm totally lost at this point
2020-11-04T03:55:07 #kisslinux <midfavila> for the record, this exact configuration worked before a reboot. nothing has changed
2020-11-04T04:07:54 #kisslinux <midfavila> ...never mind, I'm a /r9k/-tier tard. Ran dnsd, everything works now. Not used to having to think about such daemons
2020-11-04T04:08:00 #kisslinux <midfavila> sorry for flooding the room
2020-11-04T04:12:25 #kisslinux <midfavila> ...or not. fuck.
2020-11-04T05:19:31 #kisslinux <midfavila> *groans* Thank god that that's over... no idea what fixed it, but I won't look a gift horse in the maw
2020-11-04T15:52:26 #kisslinux <nerditup> What did it end up being?
2020-11-04T15:52:53 #kisslinux <dan[m]> <nerditup "What did it end up being?"> he said he had no idea lol
2020-11-04T15:53:24 #kisslinux <nerditup> Oh yah, lol I was just skimming through the train of thought
2020-11-04T15:53:53 #kisslinux <nerditup> midfavila: hopefully you determine the root cause and never have to deal with this grief again :D
2020-11-04T15:54:45 #kisslinux <midfavila> yeah that would be optimal
2020-11-04T15:54:53 #kisslinux <midfavila> eventually I said fuck it and reset my router
2020-11-04T15:54:55 #kisslinux <midfavila> :|
2020-11-04T15:55:38 #kisslinux <midfavila> no idea how a fucky router config would break DNS resolution on my PC considering it doesn't resolve against my router, but eh
2020-11-04T16:11:53 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> you use ISP dns servers ?
2020-11-04T16:12:00 #kisslinux <midfavila> Nope.
2020-11-04T16:12:22 #kisslinux <midfavila> Normally I resolve against Cloudflare. I'm working on a better solution right now though
2020-11-04T16:12:49 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> check https://servers.opennicproject.org/
2020-11-04T16:13:51 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> i just stuff a bunch of those into my resolv.conf - since musl queries them all in parallel it doesnt matter whether some are down
2020-11-04T16:14:55 #kisslinux <midfavila> I think I actually used OpenNIC for a while
2020-11-04T16:38:00 #kisslinux <bayersglassey> hallo!
2020-11-04T17:01:43 #kisslinux <midfavila> i've realized something ghastly
2020-11-04T17:01:49 #kisslinux <midfavila> there is a terrible lack of graphical manpage viewers
2020-11-04T17:04:08 #kisslinux <kiedtl> why would you need those, though?
2020-11-04T17:04:51 #kisslinux <midfavila> because staring at a terminal for 8+ hours hurts my eyes. for whatever reason I find GUI programs easier on the eyes, even when it just comes to displaying text
2020-11-04T17:06:36 #kisslinux <obsessive[m]> does viewing man in a GUI terminal count
2020-11-04T17:06:54 #kisslinux <midfavila> "gui terminal" is kind of an oxymoron
2020-11-04T17:07:45 #kisslinux <obsessive[m]> doesnt emacs/vim support reading man pages?
2020-11-04T17:08:35 #kisslinux <midfavila> Yeah, but I don't use either. And I'm trying to put together a DE that's relatively portable, so I'd like to make as few assumptions about the user's underlying system as possible
2020-11-04T17:09:53 #kisslinux <obsessive[m]> what kind of DE?
2020-11-04T17:10:38 #kisslinux <midfavila> it's nothing serious, just a hobby to help me learn scripting and stuff, maybe put it on super-low end machines
2020-11-04T17:11:02 #kisslinux <midfavila> it's kind of similar to LXDE in that sense, but it uses FVWM instead of Openbox
2020-11-04T17:11:54 #kisslinux <midfavila> and unlike LXDE I'm approaching with a mindset of efficiency over features (which I suppose a graphical manpage viewer would be contradictory in that sense, but bite me :P)
2020-11-04T17:13:48 #kisslinux <obsessive[m]> rock on
2020-11-04T17:16:53 #kisslinux <midfavila> *nod*
2020-11-04T17:16:53 #kisslinux <midfavila> honestly the one feature that I wish I could add would be tabbed windows
2020-11-04T17:17:03 #kisslinux <midfavila> I used to use Fluxbox for quite a while, and it spoiled me
2020-11-04T17:19:11 #kisslinux <midfavila> also, was the invidious CLI removed from Community?
2020-11-04T18:23:20 #kisslinux <midfavila> ld
2020-11-04T18:23:26 #kisslinux <midfavila> fuckin' hell
2020-11-04T18:23:38 #kisslinux <midfavila> sloppy focus can be a bitch sometimes
2020-11-04T21:24:49 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> the only thing i dont like about reading manpages in the terminal is that one can't click on "See Also..." "links" to other manpages
2020-11-04T21:32:29 #kisslinux <sh4rm4^bnc> midfavila, of LXDE i basically use only lxpanel, see here for a screenie https://0x0.st/id37.png
2020-11-04T21:59:05 #kisslinux <midfavila> Nice!
2020-11-04T21:59:16 #kisslinux <midfavila> I actually can't recall the last time I used a discrete panel...
2020-11-04T21:59:42 #kisslinux <midfavila> FVWM provides a module that can configured as a panel or any number of things, so it's easier to just write one yourself, haha
