I've been fiddling around in different pubnix lately and recently signed up for tilde.club¹. While I've been a member of SDF for ages, I sort of assumed most of the tildes were more or less the same.
I was wrong.
While SDF is cool, it is also pretty sedate. While there are a few things happening routinely like anonradio²; it is generally pretty quiet. Additionally, while bboard is cool it is also deathly quiet³.
Connecting to tilde.club is a little like joining a party in full swing. Yes, the sever is routinely getting hammered by a mail script someone has running, yes, IRC is full of bot-wanking; but the key thing is, it's all a lot of fun. I went ahead and started in on a cool but otherwise useless webpage full of neat hacks that I've wanted to try but never had occasion to. Everyone is just having a blast and it doesn't matter if no one knows what they're doing.
I have been trying out both bbj (the bulletin board system a bit like bboard) and news.tilde.club for nntp within the tildeverse. What it has really made me think is how my own lame attempt at creating a public "wall"⁰ in gemini-space is really a pale imitation of a system like usenet. I'll probably shut down my "wall" at some point and see what participating in usenet-space is like. Most interesting to me was finding out that each of the different tildes is linked into this semi-isolated usenet space. I signed up for tilde.club because I had thought it it would only be reachable from there, it is very cool to find out this isn't the case!
tilde.club has an impressive array of programs available. Among these is screen, which I used for years happily. Getting setup on tilde.club, launching screen with my preferred configuration⁴ is like coming home. The muscle memory is there and coupled with the software available I'm zooming around _cyberspace on a shared access UNIX system_.

3: At least, any of the boards I would be interested in participating in. There is a very vocal individual or group that keeps the anonymous board active, but you wouldn't want to actually participate.
