Tom mentions the struggle of learning to accurately pronounce the voiced alveolar trill (rolled r). I can only commiserate, having spent hours in the last few months doing the same while practicing Spanish.
It sounds as though Tom has made good progress, but this image:
imagine a deep-voiced Aussie imitating Super Mario
was too fun to not share a suggestion given to me that has at least improved my practice:
- 1. while _thinking_ of the phrase "prince of prussia"
- 2. say instead "pdince of pdussia"
For me this achieves some practice in forming the necessary alveolar articulation, called "apical" due to the use of the tip of the tongue. I need the practice because my own poor form usually results in a vibration nearer my throat.
A quick self-test for "correctness" is that the consonant sound of "D" (say "dog", "day", "door" and note the position of the tongue) is close to the trilled r and with an exhalation, vibrates in the elusive rrrrolling r.
