The rise of the "boomer shooter" has been interesting to watch. I believe my first experience in the genre was Dark Forces, a game that is still a classic. That style of FPS has thus always been what appeals most to me, oldschool or not. Hard Reset is an interesting game: it came out before, or perhaps was the start of, the new wave of classic shooters. The aesthetic appealed to me long ago when I bought it, but only now have I dived into it, nearly a decade since it came out.
It's almost quaint, to modern tastes; the cyberpunk theme is incredibly unsubtle. The gameplay revolves far less on the novelty mechanics common to most modern shooters; it is a no frills affair. I still had a lot of fun, though. The machine enemies are surprisingly menacing, and the gunplay is simple but satisfying. The level variety is a little lacking, but decent enough. For a grimy blue cityscape, the game is nonetheless a fun shooting gallery to lose oneself in for a few hours if it's your thing.
