It feels like each year the possibility of understanding the present gets further. 100 years ago we had greater confidence in our understanding of how the world worked. Socialism even seemed attainable. But now we sink ever deeper into gray: a million dead from coronavirus and instead of national mourning or an organized response there is exhaustion, numbness, and bullshit culture war.
