I've been struggling recently with that feeling of "belonging" in a fandom. I enjoy deeply diving into material I like and getting every last drop of interest out of it, but that sort of enthusiasm can annoy a lot of people. Star Wars is an interesting case study. The transformation of the franchise has essentially reformed the community. There are still older fans, but discourse amongst them is increasingly focused on negativity towards new media.
I can't help but feel like some of that rubs off onto me; I've felt jaded watching and reading new media. I've long debated whether it's a result of me growing out or being disillusioned with the franchise, or if it really has gone down in quality. Obi-Wan Kenobi pushes me in the latter category. Leaving aside things like continuity, the show felt essentially like filler. Familiar characters, acting familiarly: nothing new. The old EU took risks; Disney has played the franchise very safe. My preferences lie in the former.
