Apparently April is Global Poetry Writing Month (GloPoWriMo).
I just discovered that this was a thing, thanks to this post [1]. I have long been aware of NaNoWriMo and even attempted it once or thrice... and I'm aware of Inktober as well. Poetry should be a natural outgrowth of that, right?
Besides, I have cultivated an interest in poetry for a long time now; in another lifetime I even participated in public readings (not exactly slams) at a hipster cafe in the most god-forsaken part of Texas... but that's an entry for another time, I suppose.
So here are the first two poems I wrote for this project:
On this day, I am reminded of
The challenge I set myself (and others)
On this day last year.
Let me (us) tell the most
Amazing, mind-blowing *truths*
We know --
And see how many don't believe us.
Right now I am thinking of you, W.,
Thinking of your words which
Speak to me inwardly --
Your Leaves still grow.
I am thinking of that small cafe
that oasis of rebellion and expression
And I see you sitting there, D.,
Buzzed by espresso and nicotine.
Some weeks ago I found anew your letter
-- a dot-matrix printout of an email --
A seeming modern relic, but your
Words live, though you have passed on.
There was never a worse misnomer
Than the "Dead Letter Office" --
One word, one phrase, and
The memories revive.
