dressupgeekout's Cubase / Atari ST project

Thu Dec 23 21:34:09 PST 2021

There is actually lots of old multimedia creation hardware/software which I want to experience, but I think this one in particular would be cool.

The goal is to experience the music production landscape as popularized by the Atari ST.

IDEALLY, we would have the following:

THE END GOAL is to compose a song using technology from this era as much as possible.

Now, I perfectly understand this might not be doable. This stuff is literally as old as I am. And besides, the Atari ST didn't really sell very well in the US; it would be way easier if I lived in Germany or something. So that's why it *might* be possible to achieve all of this in an emulated fashion:

I'll be updating this page as I progress more on this project.

_ST Format_ magazine issue #48 (July 1993) is all about music.

On page 23 they mention several popular sequencers, including:

Is Cubase 3.0 the latest version which worked on the ST?

"A brief history of Steinberg Cubase"

More in-depth and better history of the DAW

Little slide show on YouTube

The chart on Wikipedia suggests that 3.0 is the latest

OK so what are some practical concerns I have to worry about?

Apparently there's a dongle? (Reddit)

The ST has serial and printer ports on the rear panel, however there's a cartridge slot on the left hand side, located next to the MIDI ports. The dongle connects onto the ST's bus there.
Steinberg should just re-release these old versions of Cubase as freeware. There are countless broken dongles out there which cannot be replaced or repaired. Do it as a tribute to the platform.

Sooo the MIDI ports already inside of the computer are NOT enough in order to get it working?

Might be referring to this "Midex" thing (AtariAge)

A complete setup here?? (AtariAge)

"Atari ST emulation using real MIDI?" (AtariAge)

"Midi on the ST" interesting thread, mentions "Sweet 16" (AtariAge)

Sweet Sixteen

Alright, I have a copy of Sweet Sixteen. Can we get it to work in Hatari?
