22 August 2020 - Every (and Occasional) Day Carry
Re: acdw's EDC
Not like I've actually left the house in a very long time, but if and when I do:
In my hands
- Phone - lotek Sony-Ericsson 3G "feature phone", unless I'm going to need mobile net access, then i'll take my iPhone
- Wallet - I am attempting to strip this down to the bare minumum, maybe to the point of eliminating the wallet itself - Basic Debit Cards, ID, Store Loyalty Cards... My bank is a hold-out for Apple Pay, so I can't use that, and don't really like the idea of it from a privacy perspective, even if it is entirely secure - the metadata alone is very invasive. Mind you - I hand that profiling data over to Visa, Mastercard and FlyBuys in the name of pragmatism, so...
- MiniDisc Player - I usually carry either my Sony MZ-NH600 HiMD player or my MZ-R700 MDLP unit, unless I'm carrying the iPhone. Sometimes tech-minimalism involves carrying more stuff ;)
In a backpack or laptop bag
If I plan on being out and about for more than an hour or so, I usually carry a bag with me, and the stuff above tends to go in there. If attending a professional workplay I usually use a small Dell laptop bag. Otherwise, I tend to opt for my Dakine backpack, unless I am on a creative photography mission, in which case I carry Lowepro camera satchel. Depending on what I'm up to, some items listed under one bag below may migrate into the bag I'm using if required for the planned activities.
Dell laptop bag
- My MacOS MacBook Pro if attending a workplace that hasn't supplied a SOE machine, or if I need my MBP's data or software, otherwise my iPad or Haiku MacBook Pro ("HaikuBook") if I'm planning on recreational or lite-use computing
- Thunderbolt to DVI converter
- DVI to HDMI adaptor
- Thunderbolt to VGA adaptor (required more often than makes sense)
- Tiny pocket mouse with retractable USB cable
- Power Adaptor
Dakine backpack
- Sanitizer and disinfection wipes in a zip-lock bag (have carried these for almost 2 decades)
- Disposable surgical masks and latex gloves in a zip-lock bag (I have also carried these for almost a decade - call me a trend-setter)
- 2 spare zip-lock bags
- Chewing Gum and/or mini mints (I like the Ecplipse mints in the metal tin - robust, life-hackable packaging and robust flavour)
- Micro medi kit: bandaids, alcohol wipes, paracetamol (acetaminophen to those of the American persuasion), ibuprofen, 2 days supply of my prescription meds)
- Mini dental floss
- Laptop/iPad as above, if use desired or required
- 10-pack TP wipes
- 10-pack facial tissues
- Opinel carbon blade folding pocket knife
- Micro watch battery LED torch
- Pen Pack with Medium point waterproof Sharpie, Artline fat waterproof marker, blue and red ballpoint pens
- Charger pack - flat stackable power banks (however many I think would be of use) and a set of rechargable AAs and AAAs for the devices I carry
- Phone/Laptop AC Adaptors if required
- My "out and about" Kindle and/or a paperback
- Sometimes - Soeks Quantum Pro Geiger counter (cos that's how I roll on some days)
- Sometimes - Superbright tactical mini torch for night adventures
- Sometimes - A change of underear/clothes/deodorant for extened-play adventures
Lowepro camera satchel
- Canon EOS 550D (Digital Rebel to you Americans) DSLR and/or Canon EOS 500N 35mm SLR
- Tascam telephoto lens
- Circular Polarising filter
- 3 x spare battery packs
- Car/AC/DC battery charger
- Rain camera hood
- Camera lens shade
- Micro telescoping portable full-height tripod
- Spare SD cards
- Sometimes a Samsug point-and-shoot
- Sometimes a Polariood 600 Land Camera
- Sometimes Polaroid film
- Phone/wallet/MiniDisc player etc as needed
- Sometimes Sanitizer/mask/medi-kit etc if I deem it to be of potential use (these days - yes, if I could actually go on a photography adventure without being fined)
