DEV BLOG - Week 45 of 2021

This is the first week of the capsule, so I have been learning a lot more about it, how it works, and how to edit all of these files to get the best effect.

Sunday, November 7th

Worked mostly on getting Roxie rolling the way I want her to. I got a good many of my kinks ironed and ended up ditching leftwm for my trusted i3.

Pomofocus is a good tool.

how I set up the gemini servers.

Monday, November 8th

Began looking into the keyboard I plan on building soon, at this stage it looks to be a Helix. I wanted to go with a Lily58Pro, but the fact is that there are too few keys for what I need to use it for. You simply can't program with it. I imagine it will take getting used to, but I'm okay with that.

Tuesday, November 9th

Continued to fantasize about the keyboard, had to shop for the soldering gear, as well as a small project to do before I touch the keyboard, because although I have watched some videos now, the last time I tried it I had no idea what in the hell I was doing and nothing worked. I want a working project before I go destroy what is to help attain my bread and butter.

The kit I wanted

QMK is how you flash the keyboard.

Wednesday, November 10th

I got paid early in the morning, put the $75 dream keycaps back and got cheap blanks. I'll get the cooler ones once I have the thing together and it works. Maybe. The blanks are Sun Microsystems colors. Not so sure now. I'll probably write up a post in Geek about it.

Thursday, November 11th

Took another ill-fated step and changed my keyboard layout to Colemak. I can see the good things about it already even though the learning curve is steep at the moment.

Friday, November 12th

Saturday, November 13th

Got in the keycaps and key switches earlier today. Bunch of runaround from Amazon on the soldering iron. Ended up buying a new one. I don't have the PCB in yet but that's okay.

One of the bigger hurdles is still learning how to type on the new layout, but I believe I can get there by doing more typing. I also corrected my phone to the layout to help me get more visually attached to the new thing.

Looks like I'll get the other soldering iron tomorrow.

Takeaways

This week has been a period of picking up new things and new ideas and running with them. Got a little more productive with work in general, so a good week.
