Professor Gray Bear

2022-01-02

I've been sort of experimenting with what people call intermittent fasting or what we used to just call skipping a meal (or 2). For several months I've been skipping breakfast and lunch on Saturdays with a few exceptions and breakfast on Sundays with a protein shake for lunch. During my time off from work I decided to continue skipping breakfast and lunch for most of the days. I usually don't have much trouble until around 3pm when the cravings start a little stronger. Needless to say, having easy to eat foods around is the absolute worst idea when you're trying this. Additionally, once I eat something, anything, I want to continue eating or grazing. If that happens I just eat something a little more substantial, and healthy, and try to hang on until dinner.

I always feel better eating less. Importantly, I always fee worse eating too much. Sometimes if I don't get enough calories in I'll start to consume too many calories later in the evening and have to guard against over-eating.

Additionally, I think it just helps to change your mind-set or focus away from eating. I mean we should eat just to fuel our body. The social aspect of meal gatherings should be separate from the actual consumption of food if you can manage it.
