summer soup

I've been bathing in a stew lately -- I've got an idea about games and play that I've been exploring.

I've been exploring it by immersing myself in critical theory, game dev., and playing games. After the kids are asleep, and chores are done I've made myself a cozy melange of lua, bibliographies, physics engines, and gameboy games.

This is a departure from how I'd have followed a similar thread in the past -- I've broken my habits from undergrad and graduate school -- all geared towards "productivity." It has been lovely to realize that I don't need to be worried about the following "production" of whatever interests me...I can explore it for the sake of exploring it. No thesis to write, paper to cite, or anything of that sort. I can learn about a thing, as focused or broadly as I want! Realizing this has been weirdly (massively?) revolutionary for me.

We're jumping full steam into summer here. The first-round of veggies are in, spinach and kale are up. Our little microcosm is motioning like it is coming out of the pandemic -- I worry this is a wee bit premature, but the temptation of a return to some semblance of social life is enticing.

Beyond the games stuff, I've been rererereading *Villette*, watched a bit of *Jupiter's Legacy* (haven't finished it, yet), as well as a bunch of poetry.

Games I've been playing are mostly NES, SNES, and GB-era RPG and JRPGs. Most of them I've never played. Some I watched others play, but almost all are new to me.

To play them I built a PiBoy DMG using a kit from ExperimentalPi. It is an absolutely phenomenal piece of kit for retro gaming.

Right now I'm mostly playing *Earthbound*, but also a bit of *Final Fantasy I* and *Terranigma*. From RPGs and JRPGs I'm going to move to rougelike's next.
