The Private Citizen, So Basically Human and Decent

Someone on Station mentioned an article by privatecitizen.press -

https://privatecitizen.press/episode/69/

In the article, there was a sentence: -

Files have to be linked, but since Gemini only uses UDP connections, it is not well suited for large downloads.

which is of course meaningless. So I thought I'd do the decent thing and wrote an email to the author to offer a correction.

Hi,

Nice article. I think the sentence below intended to say something different.
Gemini doesn't only use UDP connections (in fact, it's TCP).

> but since Gemini only uses UDP connections, it is not well suited for large
> downloads

If you're trying to express why Gemini is not well suited for large downloads,
it's because (by design) the whole document is expected to be transferred in
response to a single request. There's no means of requesting chunks or offsets
into large files. So you can transfer large documents, but you have to get the
whole thing in one go (and it better not fail, or you have to start all over
again).

Kind regards,

Kevin

I thought it was quite a nice public-spirited thing to do. Fabian A. Scherschel, who's the author, didn't seem to think so. His response was...

Hi!

You do realise that what you're referring to is not "an article",
right? How did you even get this email address without realising you're
talking about a podcast here?

Maybe before trying to explain something to someone you have never met,
you'd rather learn to read first? So you know what you're quoting there
and then check out the actual content. And maybe the follow-ups to it?

Basic human decency. Also saves all of us a ton of time and effort.

Am I going insane? Or was Fabian A. Scherschel having a bad day? Or is he an asshole? Or some combination of these?

Basic human decency would absolutely never have yielded a response like that. I mean, I *did* read the article, it has 14 paragraphs 4 subheadings, and an image. The fact it has a podcast associated with it is irrelevant to the meaningless sentence I offered a correction for.

Basic human decency. What do you know about that, Fabien?
