So my view is that technology gets cheaper, yes, but not necessarily cheaper *enough* to be widely available. Moreover, there are often other indirect "controls" that limit its availability to those with money.

So like, with 3D printing, for example, even as it gets better in terms of what you can make with it, there's some question in my mind as to how much cheaper it'll get. You also have to have at least a little bit of tech savvy to make or get designs that you then print. Sure, printer companies could make that somewhat easier, but then you're going to end up with walled gardens that only allow you to build what they have decided you can build (sort of like smart phones now).

We should be living in a time now where Wifi is freely shared across all public spaces, but we dont because governments made that illegal by saying that any illegal content downloaded will be the responsibility of whomever owns the router/hotspot, so now we have these walled networks everywhere.
