The ZX Spectrum is 40 today. I had mine later on (one of the Amstrad models, actually). It was very important for me back then, and kickstarted my IT career. Happy birthday speccy!

Sometimes you read trully amazing stuff on Gemini. The same post argumenting how easy is to implement TLS and how difficult (almost impossible to get it right) is to support say italics on Gemini clients. Someone make it stop! :D

So it looks like people are creative and, because they run out of sensible ways to do what they want, they are coming with not so good ideas (see: e m p h a s i s). Of course there are people ready to say "don't do that" because *reasons* (valid ones, to be fair). Oh, dear. I used asterisks to emphasize, I shouldn't have done that. And that's Gemini, in a nutshell :)

Checking one of those alternative search engines I ended on a webpage of someone I knew virtually many years ago. I was pleased the webpage still exists, and when I checked his "about" page, he had changed his picture (I'm guessing a recent one). Of course he has aged in the last... 20 years? But my brain was more like: what? when did that happen?

Second bug report for SpaceBeans, and this time was an actual bug. The reporter created a GitLab account for that, so I fixed it ASAP (that was the least thing I could do). I'm chuffed to have one (or two!) users :'D

I don't like the idea of NFTs, and seems like I'm not alone on this. What I didn't think about until recently is: who's buying that garbage?

I got an email from someone teling me they liked my Gemlog. Not that I try or write a lot, but it was nice to read that. Gemini doesn't have the same opportunities for interaction (compared to the WWW). Although some really like that, remember that you can always send an email (I know I have done it a few times), and you may make someone happy :)

This year I'm not even going to look at the Advent of Code. I don't have time for that, I have too many personal projects already. Besides, I doubt I will get to the end anyway; but. as they say, the important part is the journey.

I'm enjoying The Wheel of Time series. I was discussing with the missus why is this type of content available now and not 30 years ago. May be adults now were the teens of 30 years ago: very into RPGs, early computer games, etc. Or the tech supports this content (both CGI and streaming networks producing content). Or may be we are living a bad time where people look for escapism, kind of like when people went to LoTR and similar literature on rough times. In any case, I don't complain!

Shame Ariane didn't work out (I'm not going to discuss if people should or shouldn't donate, or if a paid app will get better results for the author). I wonder if it was open source and if someone, or perhaps a small community, can maintain that codebase and keep adding features. Full featured Gemini clients aren't that simple, isn't it?

I have never been interested in such things, but I feel so detached when I see people raving online about Apple events (oh, a new expensive laptop that has the ESC key back!), or the new Google phone. OK.

Pressure Machine is very sad, probably not what I really need at this time, but it is also beautiful. I can't help it.

I'm thinking about adding titan support to SpaceBeans. I've checked other protocols, and IMHO titan is what fits best. Besides it would be easy to implement. Both internal and CI handled.

I didn't know about gemini://geminiquickst.art/ but looks like the perfect start point for anyone learning about Gemini. Also in the WWW https://geminiquickst.art/

After my lunch break I was looking at some logs to see if the backups I setup last night were working and just saw something cool: someone browsing my capusule using IPv6. I mean, shouldn't be a surprise because I support IPv6, but I guess it still has that "magic" around it, isn't it?

I have finally finished the Pókemon Center CGI -feature complete- and I've released the code as well (because, why not? beware of dragons!); you can play with it here: gemini://capsule.usebox.net/pokemon/db/

Gemini is supposed to be so lowtech that looks like almost everybody starts minimal and ends rolling their own simple static site generator. It has happened to me as well.

Does anyone play any type of table-top RPG online? I used to play back in the 90s and I've been thinking to play again, but because of real life etc may need to be a remote table. I've been thinking about this for a while, but it is time to actually *do it*.

I love Ariane, but it automatically upgraded to version 4 (beta?) and lost all the bookmarks. And can't import client certificates, only create new ones. Not ideal!

Who can believe that the NHS and the UK govt can vaccinate 12 year olds *without their parents consent*? That garbage is being repeated now in social media; FFS.

Finally I made a thing to battle-test the CGI support in SpaceBeans, and let me introduce you to... Cherrygrove City Pokemon Center! gemini://capsule.usebox.net/pokemon/db/

Because "The Lord of the Rings as a D&D Game" notw I want to rewatch LotR. Can you believe I have watched the full thing *only once*? It was on the cinema, when the movies came out. Unbelievable.

I get a weird behavior every now and then with Lagrange: in the subcriptions tab, there's a number next to the star suggesting that there are new entries, but there aren't. Even if I click on "Unread", there's nothing. I love the browser, but this is kind of disappointing... oh! new posts! awm, nope :( Roller coaster of emotions.

Debian 11 "bullseye" released! Great news, although I see some server upgrades in my near future. Kids, don't run EOL software.

I just recommended Jetforce as Gemini server. It is Python and, as far as I've read the code, I like how it is written. My server is not bad, of course; but I think Jetforce is better. I do Scala for a living, but I'm not a JVM believer I guess.

So I released a new version of my server with classic CGI support, but I'm struggling to find what CGI I could implement :D I guess I could implement some dynbamic bits on my gemlog, but considering that even my weblog is static... I don't know!

I have noticed latency is quite variable when browsing the Gemini space. I wonder if this is because is quite common to host capsules using home connections and, sometimes, Raspberry Pis or similar devices. But I'm not sure why is that, surely the content is usually small Gemini documents, so is this result of TLS or something else I'm missing here?

I've released SpaceBeans v1.2.0 with... exciting... classic CGI support! Not life-changing, but I'm happy. Grab it hot from: gemini://capsule.usebox.net/spacebeans/

I think I have CGI support ready. but there are a couple of issues that I don't know how to fix (yet) re: TLS, so I think I'm going to release what I have instead of delaying. CGI without supporting authentication, does it make sense? Well, not that anybody else is using the server, of course ;)

I'm enjoying The Battle at Garden’s Gate more than I was expecting. The previous albums of Greta Van Fleet felt like something was missing. Not sure if this one is more mature or what. Actually, I don't want to say that the previous stuff was very like other bands but felt soul-less, empty? but I can't come with a better description. I wonder how it'll be their next record; I gues I'm a fan now.
