I was completely awestruck when I saw a picture of an atmospheric river for the first time. It's a perfect name for such majestic force of nature - an unstoppable stream straddling across the entire planet, funneling water from Asia to the Americas over the Pacific Ocean. The way it forms out of thin air and fades without a trace makes it even more fearsome, like a colossal beast that moves as swiftly as a bird. For a week now, one of them has been pummeling the moutains here, and the streams are running down the streets as if they are the children of their Mother in the sky. People grow quiet during these muted days, seeking refuge in silence.
This is the right time to use the oven; it'll warm up the room. I've just received a load of great potatoes, so shepherd's pie is on the menu tonight. I mix some fresh peas, carrots and corn into sauteed ground beef generously seasoned with salt and pepper, and extra butter and cream into the mashed potato ("make it extra creamy, please!"). And that's it. It's one of my favorite recipes, because you can have so much leftover with just half an hour of cooking! I also get a chance to fish out my treasured bottle of worcestershire sauce, hmmm...
