Recently, I decided to explore the fediverse a little bit. If you are wondering what this is, I will leave a link to an article explaining it below. Mastodon, a popular federated service, is very big in Japan, so I thought I would check out some anime/manga themed instances. The first one I checked out was gensokyo.town. gensokyo.town was, by their own rules, a seemingly nice place meant for Touhou project fans. I personally know quite a bit about Touhou, as someone who used to skip class in the library playing th05 on lunatic, so I decided to sign up.
Immediately, despite being advertised in both Japanese and English, I was called out for speaking English. in the words of the guy who replied to my "toot" as they are called, "This is community only for Touhou fan. Are you Touhou fan ?" Well, seeing as my profile picture was flandre scarlet, I would say yes. Nonetheless, the guy suggested I move to another community, so I just decided to. That is when I discovered Pawoo. Pawoo is an instance of Mastadon hosted by the creators of Pixiv, and my first experience with it was... interesting. Yes, the entire timeline was full of lolicon drawings, hard pass. I did not really want to be associated with that kind of stuff. This lead me to find mstdn.jp, where I wound up migrating to.
If you are wondering, the main reason for me constantly choosing Japanese instances is because they tend to be the least authoritative when it comes to rules, and well... I am kind of a weeaboo, if you couldn't tell by the capsule you're reading this on. Anyways, so far, mstdn.jp has been a kind of decent experience. The Local community is of course nearly entirely Japanese. I also had some Japanese guy talk to me about rape, so that was interesting. The cool thing about Mastodon though is that every website using it is designed to be cross platform, so I am still able to talk to and follow English accounts from other websites just fine. With this, I conclude my adventures on Japanese social media. It was... quite an experience, to say the least.
