I was convinced by many other Gemini users to purchase a Kobo Clara HD a few weeks ago. The original unit came with a broken screen, so I filed a warranty claim with Kobo and returned the unit. It took several days for the claim to process, but they eventually shipped a new replacement, and I finally took delivery of it last night.
My first task was to follow a tutorial^ to upgrade storage on the device. The Clara HD boots from a standard microSD card, so duplicating the image onto a 128 GB card was trivial. I have now set up Telnet access over WiFi, with the ultimate goal of SSH access. The tutorial I found covers the entire process.
I'm quite impressed with the device so far. Several years ago I owned a Nook SimpleTouch reader, which ran a simplified version of Android 2.1. The device was solid, but the screen resolution was too low to read full-size technical documents, such as mathematics textbooks. I've loaded my math documents from my capsule onto the Clara HD and can read them perfectly. The reader has a (beta) built-in browser, backlight that adjusts color temperature based on the time of day, and runs full Linux under the hood.
Some people have tossed around the idea of building or porting a Gemini browser on the Clara HD. I think e-readers and Geminispace would be a perfect match.
