When Operating Systems walked the earth...

I'm in one of my melancholy moods, reminiscing about my more youthful days starting out in IT.

At that time Operating Systems were abundant.

There was such diversity and innovation.

Tymnet, Primenet, X.25, Unix, RSX, Prime, CDC Cyber, Bull, DG.

There is so much to learn even today from those systems and technologies.

How those systems solved problems that still exist today.

I wish we still had the same diversity and innovation in hardware vendors and Operating Systems we had then.

I think we are the worse for it.

Look at how weve regressed...

We literally regressed 60 years in computing by re-inventing the Mainframe.

Only today we call it "The cloud".

We are literally "leasing computing resources" from a "massive computer system" that "we don't own" over slow lossy links "aka the internet".

I wonder if there are any emulators for those bygone systems...
