Off the clock.
Today marks the first day of my yearly summer vacation. I'm taking
an extra long one this year since I need a cold reboot.
When me and my partner bought our apartment and moved from the
suburbs to the city ~15 years ago I promised myself that I wouldn't
buy an SL Card (which lets you travel using the public transportation
in Stockholm) for as long as I lived here.
Mostly because of the mind-boggling amount of money/debt, our loan
covered the full purchase - yeah it was easier to get crazy loans
back then - and I could barely sleep for the first weeks knowing
that I owed such crazy amounts to the bank. But also because, well,
I grew up and used to live in the suburbs, and now I lived in the
city, everything should be close by, right?
I've been lucky to always had work within the city. Going to visit
friends who live further out usually includes riding the metro or
the commuter train (in the winter) or my bike (in the summer).
So 15 years and 0 SL Cards (0 routines including public transportation)
later I would say I know this city's streets pretty well, and it
has lead to the realization that Stockholm really is a small city,
and everything is actually close by.
I walk a lot, and this has slowly eaten up the excitement and
exploration of it all. I know where everything is and approximately
what I can expect to see in any place. Boring.
Guy Debord to the rescue.
One plan I have for this summer is to try Derivé out. I'm reading
up on different tacticts. I'm a noob, but I'll probably start with
generating some prompts and follow them, and also use a map overlay
from some other city.
That's the only thing I know for sure I'll be doing this summer,
other than that I'll take it as it comes.
I usually have some technical project for my summer vacations. This
year nothing special is planned but I'm making a gameboy emulator
with a friend and hope to make some progress on that.
Time will tell.
