Man in hospital following 'serious assault' in West Belfast

A man has been taken to hospital following a serious assault in West Belfast on Friday afternoon.

It is understood a man was attacked and beaten by two men using hammers or hatchets in the Upper Dunmurry Lane area just before 1pm.

The incident happened near a local primary school and a child's play park.

After assessment and initial treatment, the man was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Danny Baker, Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA, posted to Facebook on Friday afternoon about the incident, writing: “Folks there has been a serious incident on Dunmurry Lane, PSNI have an ongoing investigation.

“This is close to Our Ladys Queen of Peace Primary school, I would advise parents to use Twinbrook route and avoid Dunmurry Lane if possible.”

In a later statement, he added: “The local community has been left in shock at this attack which saw a man taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries. I would urge anybody with any information to contact the PSNI.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Detectives are appealing for information following the report of a serious assault on a man in the Dunmurry area on Friday, 10th June.

"A report was received around 12.55pm that a man in his 30s had been assaulted in the Upper Dunmurry Lane area.
