Cork city Fire Brigade have updated commuters who were stuck on the N40 South Ring Road for hours during rush hour on Friday evening, saying that they were undertaking a major chemical clean up.
On Friday afternoon, traffic became heavy on the South Link road before the Bloomfield Interchange.
Emergency services were at the scene as evening commuters came to a standstill heading Eastbound.
With huge tailbacks on the busy road, drivers were made aware that the N40 had been closed at Junction 8.
Cork city Fire Brigade updated commuters last night to say that they were "dealing with a hazardous material incident."
Cork Beo understands that a chemical spillage led to a a major clean up operation.
After 9.30 pm, Gardai confirmed that the spillage had be cleared and the road had finally been reopened.
There had been reports of a multi-car collision on the road on Friday afternoon, but a Garda spokesperson has since clarified that gardai were not aware of any collisions that day.
On Friday night they said: "We have no reports of any collisions. An earlier (chemical) spillage on this stretch of road has since been cleared."
