In the above gemlog, makeworld states:
"This is the strongest opinion I have on the subject of replies. If all your notifications of replies and replies to replies, etc, happens just by emailing the author(s), then it becomes very hard for readers to keep up with things and know where the replies are. I reject any system that doesn't show the "pings" or whatnot to regular browsers."
This is the first time I've strongly disagreed with anything going on in the thread. I've written extensively about my disdain for commenting systems on the web and in gopher in the past and I won't repeat it in full here. What I do want to say is that as the author of a piece of content, your desire to comment on it does not automatically give you the right to append anything to my work. I would NEVER want to allow that, even if it's just a link to your opinions.
Inform me, sure. Ask for feedback, okay. If it's interesting or relevant to what I said, I can choose to add it to the bottom of my own work if I want.
