The Tedium of Sequences

I believe I've mentioned here before that my main goal with guitar is to get really good at improvisation and soloing. Naturally, I learned the pentatonic boxes first.

But going all over scales is not very musical. You have to start working on musical phrasing. Phrasing is built of many pieces:

The sequences are the subject of this article.

Triplets

Playing a series of notes for each note in a scale. For example, you may play a triplet of ascending notes for each note of the scale as you descend the scale. Or the reverse.

So yesterday I sat for over an hour playing triplet sequences in time with a metronome. Increasing the beat slightly each time that I got comfortable.

This is not the most exciting thing that you could practice but I feel like it is really improving my ability. It really helps develop hand coordination and dexterity.

What's Next?

Where do I go after this? I'm not sure. I think that it may be time to just get the feel of rock and blues.

I plan to pull up some YouTube videos of people playing lead and try to emulate their rhythm and movement.
