Early morning sleeplessness

2021-12-18

This morning I was awake early and thinking about the current situation in the world and Covid-19.

It is telling to see how people, companies and governments are responding to this problem, and I am particularly concerned about the fact that leading vaccine producing companies like Pfizer have not considered open-sourcing their vaccine in order let people around the world create it themselves. There is no financial reason for them not to do so, even though it is more the humane thing to do than being business savvy.

Having been to places in the world where people have less than in my country of birth, my thoughts are with the people I have met there and I often wonder how they are doing, or if they are still alive. In D.R. Congo, for instance, I met people who have no telephone or computer, so there is no way I can find out what there lives are like today, and if they are happy or healthy. The world's wealth is distributed unequally, and that would not be such a problem as long as we would treat eachother with fairness, respect and dignity.

However, ashamed as I am to say it, the government of the Netherlands makes promises it most often does not keep. They do this to look good on the world stage, and make a positive impression. Yet when it comes down to implementation and action, they are often late to the party for some reason or other.

Perhaps these things are not the best subjects to lose sleep on.
