What is Copy-Protection ?
Copy-protection is a scheme used by a software publisher to
protect his product from unauthorized copying.
Sometimes the distribution diskette can not be copied by DOS
commands. Sometimes the number of times the product can be
installed to a hard drive is limited. Sometimes before starting
up, the program asks for information which can only be answered
by referring to the manual or other materials which accompanied
the original product.
This last category is called paper protection. It can also
include devices like code-wheels, no-copy paper with special
pictures on it, and colored plastic overlays.
What is Wrong with Copy-Protection ?
Copy-protection, in attempting to prevent unauthorized people
from using the product, can interfere with the secure and
pleasurable use of the product by legitimate customers.
A diskette is a fragile thing. Each time the copy-protection is
tested, the head of the floppy?drive makes physical contact with
the diskette. If the diskette becomes unreadable, you will find
that you are locked out of your own software.
Some manufacturers allow the copy-protection to be installed to a
hard drive, thus avoiding the diskette friction problem. This
works fine until you experience a hard drive crash. After you
restore from backup you discover that your install has
disappeared and you are locked out of your own software again.
Paper based protection is just plain annoying. Having to hunt
for the manual or code wheel every time you play your game gets
to be irritating very quickly, especially if you own many games.
If that piece of paper is lost, stolen or destroyed, you are
locked out of the software that you paid for.
You must hope that the manufacturer of the software is still in
business, still is shipping the product that you are using, and
is friendly enough to ship new materials for a reasonable fee.
And you still are locked out of your own software for days or
weeks until you receive the requested materials.
Then you wait for the whole cycle to repeat.
Who Should Use NeverLock?
Any legitimate owner of a program which NeverLock supports and
who wants to be rid of the risk and annoyance associated with
copy-protection, should use NeverLock.
Who Should NOT Use NeverLock?
If you are not a legitimate owner of a particular product that

Safety First
You should copy all the files of the protected product to another
directory on your hard drive, and then use NeverLock.
How Do I Use NeverLock?
Nothing could be simpler. NeverLock comes as a single executable
file, with no accessory files to keep track of. Just copy it
from the distribution diskette to your hard drive and then run
the EXE file. Watch the introduction until the 'Conditions of
Use' appear. Answer the question and the main menu will appear.
You may hit any key to bypass the animation.
Naturally, NeverLock itself is not copy-protected. You may use
the DOS copy command to back it up.
When the main menu appears use the arrow keys to move the
highlight bar to any option and press the Enter key to select it.
The program guides you every step of the way with instructions
and dialogue boxes, and there is always help available by
pressing the F1 key. There is full mouse support if you have a
Microsoft compatible mouse driver loaded.
NeverLock removes protection by searching the program files for
the data that needs to be changed, and then making those changes
with no intervention from you.
Once the copy-protection is removed, you do not need to use
NeverLock again on that particular product.
NeverLock needs 2 megabytes of free space on your hard drive for
its work files. This can be any hard drive on your system.
At the main menu, select the product you wish to unprotect from
either the 'Modern Collection' list or the 'Classic Collection'
list. NeverLock will then prompt you for the letter of the drive
your product is installed on. It scans this drive and shows you
a list of all the directories it found.
Select the directory where the product is installed. NeverLock
will now display a confirmation dialogue box explaining exactly
what it thinks you want it to do, and giving you a chance to
stop. If you decide to proceed, NeverLock will search the
directory you specified for the copy-protected files.
NeverLock creates a work directory on your hard drive. The first
one will be called NEV_001, and subsequent ones are numbered
upward. It copies the original files to this work directory and
then attempts to remove the copy-protection from the new files.
NeverLock will now prompt you again, offering to exchange these
work files for the original files in the product directory. If
you agree, it will perform the switch and leave your original
files in its work directory. In case the unprotected files do
not function properly, the originals are thus preserved.
In some cases NeverLock creates a special loader file. Watch its
report screen carefully. If necessary, it will tell you that you
must start your protected product with the special loader file
instead of the normal product file.
NeverLock monitors the whole process and presents you with a
log file that holds:
The name of the protected product.
What files were copied, searched, exchanged or moved.
Where the original files and unprotected files are located.
A success or failure message.
Exit NeverLock, change to the product directory and start the
product. If a quiz screen appears, just enter any answer. The
product will think your answer is correct and continue normally.
And that's all there is to it. Remember that the altered files
that are created by NeverLock are for your own use only and may
not be transmitted to another person in any form. And, except
for the Shareware version which clearly identifies itself as
such, NeverLock itself should not be distributed to others,
either. See the License item on the main menu for details.

Problem:
NeverLock reports that 'The copy-protection has been removed',
but the game still presents the quiz and blocks your access.
Advice:
Did NeverLock give this message after removing the copy-protection ?

If you received this message then you must start your protected
product with the special loader file created by NeverLock.
Problem:
The computer crashes mysteriously when you run NeverLock, or
run the special loader file that NeverLock created.
Advice:
A memory resident program is causing the problem.
Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to something else.
Create a new CONFIG.SYS with just one statement FILES=20.
Reboot your computer and run NeverLock again.
If you are using the screen blanker 'After Dark', remove
'AD-DOS' from your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Reboot your computer and run
NeverLock again.
QEMM in stealth mode is causing the problem. Deactivate QEMM
stealth mode, reboot your computer and try again.
STACKER in combination with PC-KWIK is causing the problem. Run
NeverLock from your uncompressed drive, or disable PC-KWIK.
NeverLock sometimes crashes when run from Windows while
in a 'DOS Session'. You must run NeverLock from DOS only.
Problem:
'I can only find ?,???,??? bytes of free disk space on your
system. This may not be enough space for NeverLock to copy the
protected files. Do you wish to continue anyway ?'
Advice:
NeverLock needs free disk space to hold copies of the protected
files. In some cases the files could be as large as 2
megabytes. If you have 800K of free disk space, NeverLock will
probably work anyway. With less than that, you may get an
error message that a file could not be copied or exchanged. If
the above sounds confusing, then the best solution is to free
up 2 megabytes of disk space on any hard drive on your system.
Problem:
' I was unable to copy all the protected files '
Advice:
NeverLock could not read the protected files from the source
media, or it could not write the files to its work directory.
Did the hard drive just become full ? Perhaps a memory
resident program is interfering.
Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to something else.
Create a new CONFIG.SYS with just one statement FILES=20.
Reboot your computer and run NeverLock again.
Problem:
' Insufficient memory to run program '
Advice:
NeverLock needs about 420K of main memory. Free up as much low
memory as you can and then run NeverLock again.
Problem:
' The file that needs to be patched is missing '
Advice:
NeverLock couldn't find the target file that it was expecting
in the directory you specified. For most recent games, the
game itself must be installed in a directory on your hard
drive. Did you select the correct directory when NeverLock
offered the list of directories on your drive ?
The manufacturer of the game has greatly changed the game files
that are copy-protected. The file that needs to be unprotected
is not present in this version of the game. There is nothing
we can do by telephone to solve this problem.
Problem:
I could not find the bytes that must be changed.
This may be a different form of copy-protection.
Advice:
The required files were present but were not what NeverLock
expected. If the name of the protected product appears more
than once on the Modern Collection list or the Classic
Collection list, try again using the next product name.
The other possibility is that you are trying to unprotect a
file that has already been altered by NeverLock or some other
unprotect utility. Be sure that the required file mentioned in
the NeverLock log is actually the file that came with the game.

Sometimes a software manufacturer will re-release a game and
change the code that tests the copy-protection. When this
happens, NeverLock may report that:
'I could not find the bytes that must be changed.'
The manufacturer of the game has deliberately altered the
critical files that are copy-protected. NeverLock can not find
the required pattern of bytes. There is nothing we can do by
telephone to solve this problem.
NeverLock will be improved in the future to support new games.
But it will not be updated for games that are older than 2 years.
