                     Tandy 1000 model A Bug Report

Since Tandy appears incapable or unwilling to provide it's users  with
respectable  support for their computers it is important that we users
assist each other in the utilization of our machines.  I for one  have
put  up with Tandy's pathetic support of the Coco for over 4 years but
was amazed that they would dare to  attempt  the  same  policies  with
respect  to a machine as popular and powerful as the 1000,  especially
when one considers that the 1000 is their most popular computer.

As a result of their attitude towards their users I am publishing this
bug report which I hope will be utilised by the  SIG  to  inform  it's
members  of bug's,  problems,  and incompatabilities in the new 1000A.
Please utilize this as an electronic chain letter  and  reuploaded  it
should  you  add new bugs or,  hopefully,  fixes to the old ones.  The
following form should be copied and used to report new bugs:



The model 1000 is truly a superior machine and by working together  we
will be better able to utilize it to it's full potential!

Nature of problem:  GWBASIC vs. 1.01 disables all sound on Tandy  *

Proposed Solution:  GWBASIC comes up in beep on mode.  Enter      *

	
BEEP OFF:SOUND ON as soon as you enter basic or place those       *

	
commands in a file called INIT.BAS and call GWBASIC with the      *

	
command BASIC INIT.  We need a patch to BASIC.EXE to fix this     *

	
bug once and for all.                                             *

NOTE: Good News! A fix for the above BUG exists. See NOSOUN.FIX in DL5
      of the TRS80PRO SIG, by Rich Leonard. It's a one-byte patch to
      BASIC.EXE and it does the job. ---- Tom Price 2/15/86


NOTE: The fix does work!  Do the fillowing to a COPY of BASIC.EXE:

      RENAME BASIC.EXE BASIC.TMP
      DEBUG BASIC.TMP
      - E 6AA9 74
      - W
      - Q
      RENAME BASIC.TMP BASIC.EXE

      This fix is apparently being delivered to new purchasers of the
      1000A.  Those of us who sent in our registration cards will
      probably be notified of the fix sometime next year!

Nature of problem: Wizardry will not recognise it's copyprotected *

	
key disk on a 1000A.  It repeatedly asks the user to insert the   *

	
Wizardry master disk in drive A:.  This problem does not occur    *

	
in the old 1000 and appears to be the result of the new BIOS ROM. *

	
The disk in drive A: does not even turn so the interuppt they are *

	
using to detect the key must not function properly.               *

	
Proposed Solution: None at present - Sir Tech thought it was      *

	
funny that the 1000 was not compatable to the PC.  Tandy does not *

	
sell the product (but then what do they sell?) and so could not   *

	
help (or care!).                                                  *

fault in that its SKIP PERFORATION command, ESC N;n doesn't work. *

	
This makes it impossible to use it for paged listings, etc.       *

Proposed Solution: Tandy needs to check this out and correct. So  *

	
far, in my contacts with them, they have denied the problem. "You *

	
must be doing something wrong." If so, they should fix Appendix   *

	
C of the MS-DOS Reference Manual so that it would be very clear   *

	
in instructing the user about LPDRVR.SYS.                         *

Nature of problem:  The Digimouse software does not appear to     *




	
or the grphics cursor properly in high res (640X200) mode.        *

	
When used with Microsoft Word or the Life demo (in Microsoft      *

	
Mouse package it does an AND with the cursor that remains until   *

	
the screen is updated.  This can be very annoying in Word.        *

	
Proposed Solution:  Tandy needs to update the Digimouse software  *

	
to be current with Microsoft latest version of the Mouse software *

	
and to provide updates to those of us that purchase our mouse     *

	
from them instead of buying the cheaper (AND SUPPORTED) Microsoft *

	
version.                                                          *

Nature of problem:Although the 1000 has HI-RES graphics on the    *

	
mother-board programs like Lotus,Jet and Cad programs do not      *

	
do not boot into HI-RES.  These programs all have predefined      *

	
EGA boards on them.  And I have heard that you can not install    *

	
these boards in a Tandy 1000.                                     *

	
Proposed Solution:I would hope that a company will soon come      *

	
out with an EGA emulator.    One other solution would be to       *

	
have the Software Co. to start regonizing the Tandy 1000 and      *

	
have drivers for the Tandy 1000 in the driver menu.               *

Nature of Problem: Fuzzy video on CM-4 color monitor.             *

	
Proposed Solution: A resistor pack on the early run 1000As has    *

	
the incorrect value of 68 ohms. This part (RP-12 on the mother    *

	
board) should have a value of 33 ohms. It could make a difference *

	
for those with a CM-4 monitor. Tandy told it repair centers about *

	
this but not us. The part is a 8-pin single inline resistor pack  *

	
located under the power supply. Not too hard to replace if you    *

	
know how ( the serv. cent. wants about $40 for the job!). The     *

	
improved video may help some users. I found this fix in the       *

	
July '86 "Dave's MS-DOS Column" in 80 MICRO.                      *

Nature of Problem: Extra line feeds on Epson Printers             *

	
Tandy has designed the printer port on the 1000 to only work      *

	
with their non-standard (and in my opinion inferior) printers.    *

	
Even when LF.COM is installed and MODE LFOFF is run certain       *

	
programs such as AutoCad and Gem continue to add line feeds.      *

	
Proposed Solution: You must cover pin 14 of the parallel cable    *

	
with tape carefully taking care not to cover any other pins.      *

	
If you are using Tandy's Printer Interface Selector be sure       *

	
and cover the pins on the cables that leave the interface as      *

	
it adds the line feeds back in (no doubt to make sure you only    *

	
use it with a Tandy printer!).                                    *
