The man who went for a walk in the McGillycuddy Reeks mountains in Kerry and never returned to his accommodation has been named a missing person by Gardai as searches continue.
Sixty year-old John Dunne is believed to have gone for a hike on a local mountain trailin the Lisleibane area of Beaufort, County Kerry on Wednesday June 1st.
Gardai released an official missing persons appeal on Thursday evening.
In a statement from the Garda Press Office, they said: "Gardaà are appealing to the public for assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 60 year old John Dunne.
"John is described as being approximately 5 foot 6 inches in height, bald, with a stocky build and blue eyes.
"When last seen, John was wearing a bright red jacket.
"Anyone with information on John's whereabouts are asked to contact Killorglin Garda Station on 066 9790500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
The alarm was raised this morning after Tipperary man John Dunne failed to return to his accommodation on Wednesday.
All day on Thursday, Kerry Mountain Rescue and Gardai have been conducting a major search operation.
With inclement weather due in the area this evening, the searchers are working hard to locate John.
Kerry Mountain Rescue said: "We are appealing to anyone who may have seen John on the hills yesterday or this morning to please contact Killarney Gardaà on 064 6631222."
The Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford has been helping with the search and teams have been combing the hillsides in the area, along popular walking routes.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport told CorkBeo: "The Coast Guard is assisting An Garda SÃochána in a search for a person reported missing Carrauntoohil Mountains, Co. Kerry.
"An overnight search was conducted by a Coast Guard helicopter. Kerry Mountain Rescue are also participating in the ongoing search."
