The first ever Spike Island Literary Festival will be off the coast of East Cork this September for a weekend of crime writing, author talks and workshops, suited to all bookworms.
The festival will take place on the unique island with a dark history, making it the perfect place for inspiring crime writers.
Island Manager John Crotty and Museum Curator Dorota Gubbins, are hosting the new festival and will feature acclaimed local and national writers including Cobh author Michelle Dunne.
The programme of events also features a stellar line-up of other renowned crime authors such as Alex Barclay, Liz Nugent, Mark Billingham, John Connolly, Tadgh Coakley, Conal Creedon, Amy Cronin, Catherine Kirwin, and Andrea Mara who are coming from near and far to chat all things literature.
The festival will have interview sessions to delve into the minds and writing methods of these famous authors, insightful screenwriting workshops detailing the challenges and rewards of writing for the screen and an opportunity to meet with publishing houses and enjoy author-led conversations.
Speaking about the festival, author Michelle Dunne expresses her excitement for the upcoming event.
"Given the incredible location, it didn't take much to convince some of Ireland and the UK’s best crime writers to join us for what will be the year's most unique literary festival. Visitors will have an experience that they won't forget."
Island Manager John Crotty explained why the island was the perfect spot for the festival.
"We are extremely excited for this interesting and highly appropriate event on the island. As well as the incredible speaking and workshop events, our guides cannot wait to take the attendees on a very special tour focused on the crimes and criminals associated with the island.
It has been home to tens of thousands of Irelands more notorious criminals over the last 400 years, who have inspired movies, books and songs. Who knows what inspiration the next generation of crime writers and seasons authors might find among the rich stories of Spike Island Cork.”
Tickets for all events are on sale now at the Spike Island website.
