In case you value your time and computer's resources, you probably don't like fancy animations, transparent window manager effects or anything like that. Just plain and simple “Windows 95/98 look” without anything else. If that’s the case, you are going to like LXDE.
I’ve tried almost all known Linux desktop environments (DE) and almost all of them have been poor in some way. Modern desktop environments require more and more CPU to work, but despite that increase, DE doesn’t provide super-useful or necessary features in return. They just look “modern” (read: resource-hungry) and that’s it. This is not the problem with “old computers”. Nowadays even mid-tier laptops slow down after 3 years of use. There’s no reason to slow it down even more with bad choices.
Released originally in 2006, LXDE is extremely lightweight desktop environment. For example, Artix Linux with LXDE uses about 200-250 MB of RAM. Manjaro with LXDE just a little bit more. That’s just a fraction what others do. Despite that fact, LXDE does its job. All the necessary features are there for an average computer user. Menus and control panels are displayed in hierarchical and logical order so the user knows exactly where to look. Usually when one installs a new Linux OS, the system needs a lot of configuration in order to look decent, but, however, LXDE works out of the box.
Yes, LXDE is “old”, but who cares if it makes one’s computer faster without any real trade-offs? Thanks to its primitive nature, there are no distractions on the screen and that is good for user’s focus; therefore this DE is an ideal choice for writing a book, drafting official documents, designing new ideas and so on. In short: LXDE is suitable for an organized person who values time and computer’s resources.
