I finally resolved the double star that is M40. It forms a right triangle in the field of view with NGC4290 and 70 Ursae Majoris:

NGC4290 was visible in my 10" scope. It was a very faint, fuzzy galaxy much smaller than any galaxy I've seen. I needed averted vision to view it. It seemed to be as large as 70 UMa in the field of view.
